The Characterization of “A & P”
I. “The girls, and who’d blame them, are in a hurry to get out, so I say ‘I quit’ to Lengel quick enough for them to hear, hoping they’ll stop and watch me, their unsuspected hero.” (Updike 242) But that is actually the opposite of what occurs when Sammy leaves his business in order to impress Queenie and the girls. He finds himself on the street alone and realizes how difficult his life will be from now on since he has no job. Sammy then looks into a window and sees Mr. Lengel checking out customers in his place. He understands then that he cannot go back and walks off into the world. In “A & P” John Updike illustrates how the characters of Sammy, Queenie, and Mr. Lengel have contradicting personalities that are distinct from each other.
II. Sammy is a round and dynamic character who
A. remains disinterested in his occupation;
B. appears stimulated of the three girls in bathing suits;
C. becomes motivated by Queenie, the girl he admires the most, to abandon his employment.
III. Queenie is a flat and static character who
