The Amazon is threatened by many factors one of them being the oil industries continuous search for the oil reserves held within the amazon. As stated within an article; “The Amazon rainforest and its surviving native communities …show more content…
A big effect on the continued Deforestation of the Amazon rainforest would be climate change. The Amazon may start to become a cause of global warming because of the decrease in the rainforests vegetation. There is tons of carbon being contained in the Amazon rainforest. The Amazon which usually helped to get rid of carbon may start to release more carbon that what it absorbs. This could create huge problems such as droughts, and decreased rainfall. There is also more of a chance for fires to start due to the degrading of the rainforest. As droughts or dry spells happen the trees can’t handle the change so they die off, whilst releasing tons upon tons of carbon. Dry seasons have gotten a lot longer in the Amazon and around it due to the loss of trees. “Precipitation that would have been captured by forests runs off into rivers instead” (Powell, Devin. Science News, 2012, pp. 5-6). This just further increases the severe droughts, and decrease in rainfall. “Drying climate threatens the stability of the Amazon rainforest, and its role with absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere” (Powell, Devin. Science News, 2012, pp. 5-6). Scientist only can hope the Amazon doesn’t reach its tipping point and become part of the problem with global warming and greenhouse
