An Analysis Of Sarah Ellis's 'Gore'
Crafting a good suspenseful story takes hard work, dedication and skill, and an author

known as Sarah Ellis has mastered the art of suspense. Sarah Ellis, the author of “Gore”, used

many tools in her task to create suspenseful stories like, “Gore”. This essay will point out the

various tools that Sarah Ellis used. Sarah Ellis has shown mastery in many fields in the

suspense genre, but this essay will shine the spotlight on the three tools she used in “Gore”

such as imagery, foreshadowing, and dialogue.

The first point will state, how Sarah Ellis uses the tool called, dialogue, to create the

feeling of suspense. She really portrays this with the constant screaming and yelling throughout

assist the reader in having a better understanding of how the room looks like by using another

thing to compare the room too. This in turn can also improve the visualization of the room as

Sarah Ellis uses foreshadowing to invoke the feeling of suspense in the reader. She

demonstrates this by using subtle foreshadowing in the story, such as, “ Isn’t that excellent? I

read it again. Sometimes, I like to do that with R.L Tankard-”(Ellis, 4) She uses this quote and

the scene in general to foreshadow the basis of the entire story such as the idea of a

psychological battle in between Amy and Lucas, and the plot twist shown at the end of the story.

She also used the characters speech to foreshadow the upcoming events in the story shown in

the few dialogues of Lucas such as, “Very dramatic, Lady Macbeth.”(Ellis, 6) and “Hey fink-face!

What are you doing out there? Demolition Derby?”(Ellis, 7) and also “Amy? You’re just kidding,

aren’t you? That was pretty good. You know if you weren’t so funny looking you could

The reader can now infer that Lucas will most likely leave the bathroom to either escape or save

Amy, which does happen in the story afterwards when Lucas bursts through the bathroom door

to look for Amy, while Amy quickly runs into the bathroom to retrieve her stolen book.

Within this long essay, Sarah Ellis has proved that she can create suspense by utilizing

the tools, foreshadowing, imagery and, dialogue to create an air of suspense. She used many

tactics to create many different suspenseful scenarios within the short story, which made the

story far more enjoyable and enticing to read. Sarah Ellis has proved her mastery in the art of

suspense time and time again, and used the following tactics; foreshadowing, imagery and

dialogue to amplify the overall suspense within the story, “Gore”. She used imagery to create a

feeling a suspense by having the reader visualize the happenings of the story,she used dialogue

to create a sense of unease within the reader and she used foreshadowing to give hints of
