Animal Farm
Animal Farm is a novel written by George Orwell. The novel was published by Penguin-books in 1945. The story, Animal Farm, takes place on a farm that eventually is controlled by animals. Orwell portrays the consequences of a revolution where leaders misuse their power of influence. There will be a special focus on the use of language and propaganda in this essay.

The owner of the farm, Mr. Jones, mistreats his livestock and the animals won’t tolerate it. A white boar, Old Major, held a speech for the animals where he introduced the term Animalism. He made it clear that man and animals share no common interests and it was time for the animals to rebel against the inferior humans. Old Major’s speech inspired all of the animals to share a mutual thought; whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy. Propaganda is used from the beginning of the story. Old Major’s use of the term “comrades” gives the animals a feeling of equality, which easily convinces them that their nemesis is the humans. “Is it not crystal clear, then, comrades, that all the evils of this life of ours spring from the tyranny of human beings?” by using the phrase “is it not crystal clear”, Old Major convinces whoever is doubting, because no one wants to appear unintelligent. In other words, you might say the animals are forced to agree on something that is “crystal clear”. “Beasts of England” is the name of the song Old Major shares with the rest of the animals. The use of simple lyrics and a catchy tune works as the last convincement. By using “Beasts of England” the less intelligent animals don’t need to understand why they must rebel against man. They’ll automatically agree with the statement Old Major has introduced, only because the song gives them a feeling of unity and fellowship, which leads to agreement.

Propaganda appears frequently throughout the story. Especially by a pig called Squealer. Squealer’s smooth and articulate use of language is very persuasive. He has a big

In the tale the pig’s convince the others animals to act and think a certain way as a result of the propaganda that occurs through the entirety of the tale. Old Major brings together the animals and protests the human leadership the animals are under. The pigs take advantage of Old Major’s death and use his speech as the first building block in their series of propaganda. The Pigs then use the song “Beasts of England” their rally cry and later destroy this ritual because it is no longer necessary. Squealer successfully uses his body language to put on a performance that convinces the animals to act in favor of the pigs. The first major piece of propaganda to be implemented is the commandments written by the pigs, which are eventually all broken. The ideas of Old Major are simplified once again with a motto the pigs create which moves the animals away from the desired results of the revolution. Napoleon then drives Snowball off of the farm and turns him into a scapegoat. After this event takes place Napoleon is able to establish himself as a heroic leader. The motto the sheep’s chant is used to drown out any chance of protest. The donkey Benjamin notices afterwards one of the commandments on the wall has been changed. Life on the farm continues in the same terrible way with no sign of hope for the animals. The strong presence of deliberate tactics to assist a leader…

Napoleon uses Squealer to be his mouthpiece for propaganda. Napoleon, Squealer and Snowball first codify Old Major's sayings into "Animalism". This give the animals some kind of guide and explanation for changes made to the Animal Farm. However, Napoleon is not opposed to changing some of the tenets of animalism to suit his own purposes. Using Squealer as his voice, he has explanations for why the pigs need the milk, and why the commandments keep changing. His biggest coup is changing history to include the idea that Snowball was really an enemy of the revolution and never received the order of "Animal Hero, First Class." Napoleon also has Squealer teach the animals a new song to replace Old Major's original anthem. The new song explains why the pigs are walking on their hind legs. Like all good propaganda, the changes are instituted slowly with just enough time in between to allow the animals to absorb the change and not to question the next change.…

In the story, Animal Farm, the animals have taken over Manor Farm and have taken matters into their own hands. Naturally, there has to be a leader of some sort and since the old leader got run off; it is time for Napoleon to become the leader of Animals Farm. Of course not all animals are created equal, even if it does say that in the last commandment. There has to be different classes, kind of like a pyramid. Usually the leader sits on the top of the pyramid and then there is a middle and lower class. How does a leader ensure that they stay at the top? Well for Napoleon he made sure he stayed at the top by making the other classes uneducated, made them work, also didn’t remind them of the revolution.…

Animal farm was writing and published just as the cold war began to start. But the events in the book represent the time between 1917 and 1943, and the characters symbolize individuals in Russia at that time period. For example Napoleon (one of the pigs) represents Joseph Stalin who was the second leader for the Soviet Union he helped make it in to a superpower. Napoleon took control of the farm after Old Major passed away. Old Major portrays Karl Marx who was a philosopher, social scientist, historian and revolutionary. In his life time he was not noticed to be any of these things, but after his death people stared to accept his ideas. This also happens in the book they stated to understand Old Major more when he was gone, and also wish he was back when Napoleon started to treat only the pigs better than any of the other animals. He had the other animals working all day to build a windmill for electricity and boxer (one of the horses) represented the working class. Boxer worked day and night because he thought it was going to benefit all of the animals.…

I would really have to thank you all for your bravery and determination during the Battle of the Cowshed. Without all those hard work, there is no way we could have won the battle. I am sure that all of you remember what happened during the battle, am I right? I guess all of you were thinking that it was going to be another normal day, but something changed it all. Mr. Jones, his men and six others from the neighbouring farms were attacking the farm, hoping to regain control over animal farm. They were all armed with sticks except for Jones himself, who carried a gun. Thank goodness I had read up on the battle earlier and was well prepared, both mentally and physically. Though not expecting it, all of you did your part perfectly, except for Mollie, who was hiding behind her stall the whole time during the Rebellion. The pigeons alerted the animals that Jones and his men were going to attempt an invasion on the farm to get it back. When the men first charged, Benjamin, Muriel, the sheep and I attacked back, but it was a trap, and the men who travelled further in were surrounded by the other animals that attacked relentlessly. I was wounded while trying to attack Jones, but it was not that serious after all. Jones tried to fire at me, but the sheep behind me was shot and killed. Jones fell to the floor and his gun shot right up and fell into the mud. We have placed it at the base of the flagstaff, agreeing to fire it twice a year: on October 12th, the anniversary of the Battle of the Cowshed—as we have dubbed their victory—and on Midsummer’s Day, the anniversary of the Rebellion. Boxer thought that that he had killed a stable-lad and felt really miserable, but was cheered by the knowledge that he did not kill the stable-lad, but only stunned him. We knew this because by the time we found Mollie, the stable-lad had recovered and taken flight. Finally, boxer and I were awarded the medal “animal hero 1st class”, and the dead sheep was awarded…
