Booker T Washington Vs Dubois Analysis
Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois were two of the most influential men of their era and there many differences between these two highly accomplished scholars. Booker T. Washington was born a slave on April 5th, 1856 in a Virginia planation; balancing work and education as a child, Washington was determined to learn how to read and write. As he continued his studies, General Armstrong had discovered Washington and offered him a scholarship to attend Hampton University in which he was proposed a teaching position upon graduation. He founded the Tuskegee Institute in which he produced many books, and proclaimed many of his theories and philosophies. As an activist, DuBois wrote many books and essays such as “The Talented Tenth” which asserted his philosophy that African Americans had a responsibility to educate themselves to become leaders in the black community. He stated, “From the very first it has been the educated and intelligent of the Negro people that have led and elevated the mass…” expressing that educated black men becoming leaders of their race brought change and advancement in the society. DuBois’s methods in regards of advancing African Americans in the American society was solely through urging the significance of education. He mentioned that “the best and most capable of their youth must be schooled in the colleges and universities of the land” which supported his argument that through developing a small group of educated blacks would help accomplish social change. Overall, Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois both wanted to help African Americans in the American society, but had different ways reaching this

    “… the Emancipation Proclamation seemed but to broaden and intensify the difficulties; and the War Amendments made the Negro problems of to-day” (11). The Emancipation Proclamation abolished slavery, but there was still loopholes to the system which allowed slavery and gave the open window for racism and inequality to still exist. This is because African Americans were never seen to be as an equal to the white man. Dubois also mentioned in one of his essays the importance of educating and training the black man. He spoke on this from a position where he believed that all men should obtain a skill and become educated to break the ongoing cycle of blacks not being educated.     On January 1, 1863, the United States’ Negro population was proclaimed “henceforth and forever free” according to President Abraham Lincoln’s establishment of the Emancipation Proclamation. However, years after its release, the Negro population was still mistreated. After the Civil War, white southerners were relentless in establishing themselves as the superior race. The newly implemented Black Codes restricted African Americans' of their new freedom and essentially began a new form of slavery. African Americans experienced violent discrimination and devastating poverty daily. In an attempt to diminish this oppression, two great and well respected leaders of the black community, Booker T.     Alonzo Herndon was born into slavery because he was son of his master Frank Herndon and mother Sophenie. At age seven he was emancipated and began to work with his family members in social circle Georgia as a sharecropper. 13 years later he left and started a barber shop in Clayton County. After his business thrived he decided to invest in real estate, and then entered the insurance world. While pursuing a job in insurance he made Atlanta Life Insurance Company which had branches in Florida, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee, and Texas.
