(1.2). Explain how health and safety is monitored and maintained and how people in the work setting are made aware of risks and hazards and encouraged to work safely.

Every practitioner has a duty of care towards the children and the young people in the setting. Every setting has health and safety policy and fire procedures in place and they review the policy often. All staffs should adhere to the policy and able to respond appropriately to the incidents. The staffs should be vigilant towards any significant changes in children’s and young people’s behaviours, unexplained bruising, marks or signs of possible abuse, signs of neglect and children’s comment which gives cause for concern.

Every day the health and safety check list will be carried out by the staffs morning and early afternoon. All equipment will be checked and any damaged ones will be thrown away. All equipment and toys should be suitable to the relevant age group. Staffs should make sure that the floors are not slippery and there are no sharp corners or items inside and outside the setting. Also, all the unused plug sockets will be covered up, all the wires will be secured and placed away from the children’s reach. All staffs are expect to be vigilant throughout the day. All surface will be cleaned to minimise the risk of harbouring harmful bacteria and viruses. Especially, the place where the food will be prepared and served for the children and adults. All staffs should adhere the health and safety act and should have under gone training for food hygiene.

All entry point of the setting should be secured. All visitors and staffs should sign in and out on the relevant record book. No visitors should be allowed without the relevant information. The children should allowed to leave with the authorised person with prior permission. Ratio of the adults to children should be met at all times in each room and outdoor area. When ensure that this is done by carrying out risk assessments and daily checks on a regular basis and if any health and safety issues arise with the equipment or environment we will attend to these issues and recorded the information and remove any fault from the area and ensure that other members of staff are aware of these issues. Plug socket covers, safety gates and door stoppers are monitored and maintained by checking that plug socket covers are in all sockets and check that none are broken, if any plug socket covers are found broken they should be removed and replaced with new. Door stoppers must be put in place to ensure that children don’t trap their fingers in the door when going out and all members of staff must put these in place and if any fall of the door members of staff should replace them immediately. Personal protective equipment must be available at all times and all staff should use this when changing nappies, cleaning up sick and if a child is bleeding. When wearing personal protective equipment we stop the spread of germs and cross contamination to anyone else. If any member of staff notices that personal protective equipment is getting low on stock that member of staff should inform the manager so more personal protective equipment can be ordered.     There are many legislations that influence healthy safe and secure environments for early years settings these include: the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 which all settings have responsibilities under this means that settings must meet certain rules to make sure all children our safe. It also means that settings have to be careful that there is no risk of injuries to anyone. This means that everyone in a children’s setting has responsibility for the safety and health of everyone there. Regarding settings which educate or care for children the Health and Safety at Work Act states: that buildings should be in a good stable position with the safety of the people using it, the building and surroundings should be safe and clean, all equipment of the setting should be stored and used safely and that working practises must promote safety and health of children. Another legislation is the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrence Regulations 1995 this requires the report of setting relating accidents, diseases and dangerous occurrences. It applies to all the settings activities however it doesn’t to all incidents. The following are the things that must be reported to the health and safety person in the setting. Death or very serious injury to a child, staff member or member of the public, certain setting related illnesses and dieses, an over three day injury and a dangerous occurrence- something that has clearly could have been done but does not actually result in a reportable injury. Another legislation is the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 which states that substances which can injure or make people ill should be used as well as stored safely, for instance substances such as bleach, paints and chemicals. This legislation states that any potentially dangerous substances or materials must be labelled showing they are hazardous also they must be stored correctly in a locked cupboard.…
