Receptive skills:

According to J. Harmer in his book The Practice of English Language Teaching, “receptive skills are the ways in which people extract the meaning from the discourse they see or hear”. In the following text “Playing with your food” the main skill that is being practiced is reading and along with it other sub-skills are being developed such as practicing new vocabulary, reading for gist in order for the students to understand the main idea.
Enhancement of receptive skills will increase the rate at which students comprehend English language and allow students to practice new vocabulary in its context from the text.

1. Generating students’ interest in the topic of the text.

The teacher gives the students a picture of a vegetable and then a musical instrument and then writes the title of the text on the board, “ Playing with your food”. The teacher then asks students to take some time and make predictions what they think the text will be about. After that some of their ideas will be listed on the board.

Rationale: This activity will help students predict the topic and prepare for the vocabulary that might be used in the studied text.

2. Reading for gist.

The teacher will then ask the students to read the text quickly for a couple of minutes after which they will be asked if any of their predictions, from the listed of the board, were mentioned in the text. After discussing the text briefly students will be asked to read and answer the questions in Ex.1 (see attached exercise worksheet) in order to check if they have understood the general idea of the text.
After checking their answers the teacher will ask the students “What is the main idea of the text?”, “ Is this something that you would try yourself?”.

Summary 2In his writing, The Movies That Rose From the Grave, Max Brooks, explains how movies, books, video games, and television shows about Zombies have continued to be a leader in the horror industry for the past 40 years. The story of Zombies originated as myths and tall tales. The first Zombie movie, White Zombie, was released in 1932. During this time period, a Zombie was a living person that was made to act as a corpse. With the release of George A. Romero’s movie, Night of the Living Dead, in 1968, the notion of a Zombie changed drastically. In this movie, Zombies were portrayed as people who had risen from the dead and terrorized society. Zombies destroyed the brain of their living victims and lived off of human flesh. Their main purpose was to destroy human society. With the development of computer games such as Resident Evil and House of the Dead, more people were joining the Zombie craze. More zombie movies were created and the following increased.…

Therefore children become literate if they are placed in an environment that is rich in print and are encouraged to explore it just as they master the spoken language if they are spoken to by others as it provides an opportunity for them to respond (Mason & Allen, 1986, as cited in Module 4, Unit 2, p. 32). Goodman (1970) in his studies found that children made 60%-80% less errors when they read words in context. Therefore, children should focus on the meaning of what they read rather than laboriously sounding out individual words. Goswami (1986 & 1988) as cited in Module 4, Unit 2, p. 29 , states that children can read unknown words by making analogies with known words. Sounding out the words is a last resort strategy and they are given little guidance on how to do this.…

Comprehension helps students understanding what they are reading. “Short term memory helps automatic decoding which is necessary for readers to comprehend and understand what they are reading” (Pardo, 2004, p.273). Pardo (2004) states that “Teachers help students get to this level of automatic decoding by providing instruction in phonemic awareness and phonics at all grade levels” (p. 273). When students spend to much time focusing on sounding out words they have less energy to think about meaning (Pardo, 2004). Students in lower grades will work on phonemic awareness and phonics but older students will practice automatic decoding through spelling vocabulary and high word frequency (Pardo, 2004).…

To help improve the ability to recognize words while reading a teacher could have a word wall, sight words, play word games. If a child has trouble identifying words while reading than it could affect their fluency and comprehension. Children cannot use expression in reading if they do not understand the word or phrase they are reading. So word recognition is an important factor in understanding the text and to be a effective reader.…
