Ms. Anne J. Thompson

Tallahassee, Fl. 00000

Dear Ms. Thompson:

Stovall Home Products received your customer compliant letter referencing the discoloration of your jacket after using our white-n-brite liquid bleach product.

We here at Stovall understand your concern and frustration of possibly ruining a new jacket. Our entire team here at Stovall conducted a thorough investigation and found the root cause of the problem.

In your compliant letter you stated the treated areas around the stains on your jacket had turned to an ugly yellow. On our white-n-brite label directions we advise all consumers to follow the garment care tags before using our product and to never use it as a spot remover. We also contacted the manufacturing company that made your jacket, and they stated that your jacket was made of a cotton polyester blend that was treated with a resin-based, stain resistant finished that is not compatible either dry or liquid bleaches.

Stovall Home Products has come to the conclusion that the discoloration to your jacket would have never happened, if all instructions had been followed pertaining to the garment care tag by the manufacturing company and the label direction on the white-n-brite; Therefore Stovall Home Products cannot reimburse you for your jacket. As one of our valued customers we would like to provide you a solution that could possibly restore your jacket back to its original color. The solution is as follow and has three ingredients. One gallon of cold water, two tablespoons of sodium sulfate and a half cup of white vinegar. Mix all ingredients thoroughly and immerse the entire jacket for about 20 minutes. Once the time has elapsed, rinse the jacket in water only and let it drip dry.

Ms. Thompson, only use this solution if you are comfortable, because Stovall Home Products will not be held liable.

In 1728, the first bleaching company was founded by Scottish using crofting technique. They soaked the fabrics in a lye solution and washed them in water. After this, the fabrics were spread out in a large field for around two weeks. This process was replicated six times in order for fabrics to be whitened enough. “This method was repetitive, arduous, and took over large area of lands which could have been used for other purposes such as farming (Duncan).” In early 18th century, Karl Wilhelm Scheele, Swedish Chemist, discovered a highly reactive and greenish yellow gaseous halogen element and named it Chlorine. Later on, in 1785, Claude Berthollet, French Scientist, found the advantage of Chlorine; it was the most effective whitening agent (Morrison). He also invented the new hypochlorite bleach. It was consisted of soda ash which had soaked up Chlorine gas and named after the town where it was contrived, “Eau de Javelle” (Wagnall). During the Industrial Revolution, people produced the bleaching powder using lime. “They treated lime with water, spread them all over a large room, and pumped the chlorine gas into the room to be soaked up by the lime (Morrison).” It was used until liquid chlorine and sodium hypochlorite solutions were invented around World War…

If the ink color on your garment looks somewhat washed out or faded in an even manner over the entire print, you are most likely experiencing fibrillation. Fibrillation is a condition that occurs when fibers break loose from the ink film during to washing. The contrast between the ink and the fibers poking through causes the print to have a faded, “hairy” appearance. On the part of the screenprinter, there are a lot of variables that contribute to this faded appearance. The cause could stem from the type of ink used, the application process, or the fabric used. As a consumer, your best recourse to preventing or decreasing fibrillation is to turn your garments inside out…

The purpose of this lab was to synthesize indigo and an azo dye and to determine how effective each dye was to dye different types of fabrics. 0.168g of 2-nitrobenzaldehyde was dissolved into acetone along with 25 drops of distilled water and NaOH to synthesize indigo. The solution was filtered, and the solid indigo was placed into the filter flask to reduce indigo to leucoindigo with 10mL of 3M NaOH. The flask was heated along with sodium dithionite and distilled water added to the flask. Afiber strip was added and heated for 10 minutes. The strip was removed and rinsed with water. A3 was the azo dye that was assigned, and 0.499g sulfanilic acid was added to the test tube with 5 mL of sodium carbonate. The tube was placed in a hot water bath, and…

I wish to express how disappointed I am in the garbage collection schedule in my community. The collection of garbage is a necessity in every community which must not be ignored or toyed with. For the past two week period, there has been a great inconsistency in the dates of garbage collection as well as the times that our garbage has been picked up in the past. This sudden change in the collection schedule has greatly altered our small community’s general routine as there has been an alarming increase in rodents and pests, very unsightly garbage disposals and a growing rate of stray dogs in the area.…
