Courage in the Crucible
JOURNAL #4
“Courage means doing something even though it can be difficult and fearsome,” is a quote that is very true. The dictionary definition of courage is “the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc.” I think a perfect example of this thought would be a recent high school graduate joining the military. With wars raging all over the world, a solider is almost guaranteed to be on the front line. A young man or woman who has their whole life ahead of them, to look forward to, has to have a lot of courage to face the gruesome challenges of a military life. Nobody knows what this life is like until it’s you in this position. I am sure the challenges of this job are both difficult and fearsome in more than one way. These people have to have lots of courage to put themselves in this position. Police officers also have to have this courage to risk their lives every day to protect citizens of the community from danger. Firemen have the courage to go into a burning building to save other people. This would be very fearsome and a difficult task to do. Doctors, pilots, and just regular people face problems that involve courage. There are many more examples of this. These are just some of the reasons I believe that the statement “Courage means doing something even though it can be difficult and fearsome,” is

I would say that John Proctor is the most courageous character because he speaks up for himself when talking to Reverend. Most importantly he sticks with his beliefs. He confessed about having an affair with Abigail just so his wife wouldn’t be killed. He tries to please Elizabeth as much as possible because of he is left with a guilty conscience. He chose to be hung instead of living in shame. He would always think of others before he thought of himself. He no longer cared about being hanged because he knew he was a sinner and shouldn’t have done what he did. He tried saving others over himself. Throughout the whole story John helped out others when it would put himself in risk. Out of all the people I would easily say that John Proctor…

In The Crucible, the author displays the power that fear and suspicion have over people through the divine will of the main characters as it spreads throughout the community. During act three of The Crucible, Mary Warren was taken in front of the court to confess the lies and suspicion that the young girls were spreading throughout the town. While trying to confess, Mary was pressured into irrational fear of being convicted of being a witch, because of this Mary turned against Mr.Proctor, accusing him of witchcraft. Without thinking Mary let her fear control her actions, which resulted in the arrest of John Proctor. People would rather make decisions based on avoiding fear then facing them, finding the easy way out of a bad situation.…

“Courage is simply the willingness to be afraid and act anyway, “ says Dr. Robert Anthony. What is the definition of courage? It doesn’t exactly mean to be fearless about something, but to not let fear stop you from doing it. Courage can have a positive effect because it helps people to achieve their dreams and creates the opportunity for amazing things to happen. Everyone has different opinions, though, and some people think of courage in a negative way. For example, some people who have gained the courage to do very dangerous things have gotten themselves killed, or seriously injured. However, something positive came out from that result, and things happen for a reason. The fact that those people were brave enough to even attempt something…

The Crucible was a very well written play, and gave many themes throughout its entirety. A huge theme was Integrity and Courage. People needed integrity and courage to make it through with their goodness back in the times of witch trials, and people still need it today just so their goodness survives. Many people showed their integrity and courage, but some stood above the rest. Giles Corey died a free man, John Hale stood up to the courts corruption, and then ended up leaving, Rebecca Nurse did not confess, and John Procter died with his name and goodness.…

Throughout, the play a variety of people had pride however sometimes having pride leads to persecution. During the play Giles Corey always stood up when he thought something was off. Also sometimes he didn’t say anything with his confidence. This led to persecution by Giles Corey having pride in not giving the court a name. Giles Corey is getting pressed and he is not giving up the name the court wants. So Giles Corey says “More weight” (miller207). This quote was important because he ends up dying from how much weight they put on him and they falsely accused Giles. Another example of pride would be when John Proctor tears his confession up. John confessed to adultery and signed a piece of paper. The court wanted to hang it up on the courts…

Several characters show heroism in Arthur Miller’s book the crucible but the one that shows the most heroism is John Procter. He is the one that causes the witch trials to start because he was having an affair with Abigail. Abigail wants him to leave his wife for her. And when he refuses to leave his wife for Abigail. Abigail gets hurt and will do anything to be with John Procter. One of the first places where John Procter shows heroism is when he tells Abigail “Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut of my hand before I’ll ever reach for you again” (Miller 18). He’s telling Abigail that’s he is done with her and that he wants nothing to do with her anymore. John also shows heroism when he stands up to hail and the…

Have you ever wondered if witches were actually real? In the play “The Crucible,” people thought they were real. In this story the mass hysteria that ensues is comparable to the Red Scare of the 1950s. In these similar conflicts people were scared of one another and falsely accused innocent people. We can learn something from these conflicts though. “The Crucible” has many events and themes that can apply to real life.…

“Fear is simply the consequence of every lie”~Fyodor Dostoyevski. Dostoyevski explains that fear and lying come hand to hand. Telling lies creates a fear of being discovered having told a lie. In addition, one only conjures a lie if there is something to hide. Therefore the discovery of secrets also induces fear. Fear, whether it be fear of life, or reputation, can heavily influence the actions of society. It possess the ability to impair the judgement and actions of people. Similarly, in The Crucible by Arthur Miller, the townspeople are completely ruled by fear. This fear is mainly caused by the strict punishments given to those who violate Puritan morals. It also brings along a sense that one must protect his own life and interests. This need for self-preservation leads to widespread denial and in some cases, even the accusation of others. Governed by the terror of Puritanical law, the townspeople learn to fear its consequences and become quick to deny and accuse others of witchcraft to save themselves, which ultimately leads to the tragic death of innocent citizens…

The Salem Witch Trials were among some of the most horrendous, irrational, and imprudent, events of the 17th century. Not only were numerous people imprisoned, based on false testimonies and lack of judicial intelligence, but hung, or in one case, pressed to death. The claims of witchery caused calamity throughout the village, neighbors turning on one another; friends accusing each other just to salvage their own lives. In The Crucible, Puritan way of life revolves around the church. If you announce your opinion, you must disagree with the church.…

Decision making can either make or break someone. The Salem Witch Trials consisted of many false accusations and unnecessary deaths.
