Dell Computer Corporation
The multinational Dell Inc. was founded in 1984 by Michael Dell out of his college dorm room under the name of PC’s Limited. Dell wanted to provide personal computers that were built to order. At the time most computers that were available were stock. If someone wanted a custom designed computer they would have to assemble the components themselves. Dell was not the first to pursue the build to order idea, but he was the first to make it successful.
In 1988, Pc’s Limited became the Dell Computer Corporation. By 1992, Dell made Fortune magazine’s top 500 of the world’s largest companies. Dell surpassed Compaq in 1999 as the largest seller of computer in the U. S. In 2003, the Dell Computer Corporation became Dell Inc. after the company expanded into the multimedia market. In 2007, Dell Inc. ranked 34th largest company worldwide by Fortune magazine, and 8th as the most admired U. S. companies.
So far in 2008, Dell has experienced a 21% growth in its worldwide sales and nearly 16% in its domestic sales. The technology industry’s average growth is 15% and five percent respectively. Dell’s global consumer business grew more than twice the industry rate from last year. “Our global strategy is to be the premier provider of products and services, including those that customers required to build their information-technology and Internet infrastructure,” says Michael Dell.
As stated earlier, Dell Inc. was a successful pioneer of made to order computers, one of the reasons for Dell’s success is its ability to develop, learn, and apply new technologies to its manufacturing system. In an industry that changes daily being ahead in a technology development is a vital component for a prosperous technology driven company. “No advantage and no success are ever permanent. The winners are those who keep moving. The only constant in our business is that everything is changing. We have to be ahead of the game,” says Michael Dell. In order to “be ahead of the game” Dell
