Writing in the English discipline compares to writing outside of the academic setting in that writing in “the real world” consists of book reviews, news articles, journalism, conference presentations, blogging, etc. Writing in the English discipline usually allows the writer to write more freely and explain his/her own ideas. For example, if one were to become a book reviewer or a journalist, he/she would be expected to address their opinion. However, if one were to become a current event columnist, he/she would be expected to strictly jot down the facts.…

I am writing this letter regarding my request for funding to attend a business writing course at Florida International University. This course is only held once a year in our area and it will be on the 11 day of July ending on the 13 day of July 2013. The business writing course is the only course held of its kind and it is the most cost-effective professional development opportunity available to me this year. The writing course offers all the tools, techniques and concepts related to business writing, such as critical problem solving with employee communication skills, this course will be a major benefit and provide me with additional knowledge on skills I already possess; by teaching me how to write more clear, crisp and effective. The course will also guide me on how to dissect business documents so that our organizational initiatives will accelerate and performance should increase within Smith International, I will also gain more knowledge on the clarity, impact, and overall professionalism of on-the-job e-mails, letters, and reports which I deal with on a day-to-day basis.…

College students today battle between standard grading scales and pass/fail scales due to its major differences. A pass/fail grading scale has its pros and cons as well as the standard grading scale. The main purpose for offering the pass/fail grading scale for students rather than the standard letter grade is just an easier passage for “sympathy” without serious consequences to the cumulative grade point average.Students who receive a "70" or higher grade typically will pass the class, while those who receive a "60" or lower grade will automatically fail.…

My history as a writer began like the opening of any book you could read in the world. To extrapolate, I began my adventure in reading and writing by learning to read from left to right, and from right to left. I feel like through my early learning in Montessori school, and Hebrew school I have gained enough knowledge to pursue the next course in college learning. In my past I learned that reading and writing in different languages is difficult. I learned the numbers in French and I never pursued the French vocabulary flash cards. I was about seven when I began to learn about the French language. I prospered for a while it seemed at Hebrew school. Writing in general was hard as a child, and I only remember that my favorite word in French was “wheat” and my favorite character in Hebrew is Lamhad. I was brought to this class to experience a way of learning that is both personal and comfortable. I am happy to have a professor that cares a lot about his students. The teacher student bond is similar to the mentor deciple bond. They both require patience and humility to begin. The mentor disciple relationship is what encompasses for me, my experiences with background, family, hobbies, interests, jobs, and dreams. The mentor disciple relationship is what I strive to achieve in my life, because I see all things in life have the same relationship.…

I have never been very good in English class; I find that adverbs, nouns and adjectives confuse me. I have, however, enjoyed composition. I am the kind of writer that writes about anything for any reason. It can be fiction, non-fiction or even a mix of both; but I go on and on until I get bored with it, than stop. Usually when I receive an assignment, I just start writing and writing and when I think I’m done, I will proof read several times while making changes. If I had to compare my writing to anything, it would be to fireworks being lit off and flying through the air in an array of colors. However, there are pros and cons to this “writing style”, and even things that need, or should be, changed.…

Someone I’ve always looked up to as a leader has been my grandmother. She has a natural ability to guide me and others in the right direction. She doesn’t hold a job title that requires her to possess leadership qualities, it comes natural. It is easy for her to take control of a situation without coming off as overbearing and aggressive. She creates an atmosphere that puts others around her at ease and makes it comfortable for others to be outgoing. A leader should not only be able to leader in their professional life but also in their personal life.…

If a standardized test was in the way of receiving your diploma, do you think you would pass? Students today are given a huge amount of pressure to finish high school and to achieve an education. Some people believe academic achievement will improve by requiring high school students to pass a standardized test before being awarded a diploma. However, I disagree with this argument due to more pressure being put on students, the high number of drop outs already, and the increase of drugs that could be used by students. High school is just the beginning for students and giving them an enormous struggle to move up to even bigger struggles in college can decrease academic achievement, other than try to increase it.…

Culture shock. Defined by Webster’s dictionary as the feeling of disorientation experienced by someone when they are suddenly subjected to an unfamiliar culture, way of life, or set of attitudes. Though not always pleasant, experiencing culture shock opens the eyes of those who experience it. I know it opened mine. While I had traveled outside of my country countless times before, my moving here for college required me to change many of my ways and mind sets. At first I resisted change and was resolved to have everyone adapt to me rather than me to them. I quickly learned that is not the way to view things.…
