Vancouver assignment draft | Ranked third in the world for the most livable city on the planet, Vancouver seems to be a utopian city. Luckily, this coastal seaport city has the best climate of Canada. It’s also one attractive tourism site. However, besides these qualities, Vancouver has been struggling with inequalities between two main traffic corridors of the city: West Hastings and East Hastings. Therefore, it’s interesting in this essay to study the economic and social contrast between these two major streets.

First of all, West Hastings Street is located in the centre of the business district of Downtown Vancouver. This is an ideal location because it’s where all the big companies and organizations are located. In addition, Downtown Vancouver is nearby the main port of the city which has many commercial trades every day. Moreover, WHS will be chosen to be the new location for the privately funded organization: The first such export exhibition facility of its kind in the country, the privately funded Canada Export Centre will be in the heart of the city's business district at the old Scotiabank building at 602 West Hastings (Morton and Brian).
This export centre will create opportunities for companies and organizations to show their products in occasional showcases. Consequently, many investors and business people would visit West Hastings Street which may make this street become the biggest business street of Downtown Vancouver. Second, East Hastings Street run through East Vancouver and Burnaby. Unfortunately, it has been the poorest street of the city since the twentieth century. This street is filled up with drug use and individuals who suffer from mental illness, the majority of whom are homeless. The Downtown East side’s has a high population of people who are addicted to drugs such as cocaine and heroin. Since 1993, there has been an average of 147 drug-related deaths every year, an

They are counteracting their inequality in numbers by participating in the annual Valentine’s Day women’s memorial march. Here they urge the public to re-see them as part of the community, label them positively and help them to become publically visible. Febuary 14th has been named the day to remember those who have disappeared or been murdered from the downtown east side. Main and Hastings, a familiar area to most of the downtown east side is commonly known as pain & wastings. In this area alone since 1997 the HIV/AIDS rate has become an epidemic. Infection rates are higher in women than above men for aids/hiv and the over all rates of HIV/AIDS in this area exceed anywhere else in the devoloped world. Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside has become a spectacle of entertainment in the media, rather than concern. Media portrays downtown as an issue to Vancouver’s culture /tourism rather than an issue of individuals and poverty. Another problem is that Canadian doctors tend to over medicalize which can help lead to addiction. Society continues to enable these people's inequality by practicing forms of race blindness. Most of society chooses to ignore the social suffering carried by the aboriginal people of that neighborhood. “In 2005, Loblaw Companies Limited moved closer to completing one of the largest transformations in its history. [They] were challenged by the size and impact of the short term costs associated with executing certain elements of the transformation.” Working facilities merged, and there were major store renovations. A new head office and Store Support Centre was established in Brampton, Ontario; which now employs 2,000 Ontarians. However, these expansions caused some setbacks. Loblaw made changes to their national systems platform and supply chain. This change disrupted the flow of its inventory and had an overall negative effect on the sales and earnings for 2005. This simplified their distribution network which made the movement of inventory much less time consuming and lead to lower costs. A capital investment program exceeding $1 billion was used to continue the expansion of “The Real Canadian…

Prioritizing the construction of stores based upon expected revenue will enable Umpqua to carry out large merger and acquisition process smoothly (in terms of maintaining their cultural bank image) and efficiently (in terms of cost) such as in Humboldt situation. Blending local neighborhood cultural values along with Handshake Marketing into Umpqua’s own cultural value in Bend will create ‘home’ kind of atmosphere and consequently Umpqua’s ‘Brand Experience’ will get embedded into local population. The idea of “Express” stores may face internal opposition. Change is not always readily welcome. In addition, smaller size stores may not reflect the exact cultural feel and effect as compare to regular Full Service stores. Prioritizing the development of Humboldt stores may give advantages to Umpqua’s competitors by entering into the market before them. Creating local cultural values in the store may create overhead in terms of extra money and…

The vehicle would function as both a car and a home over the next three weeks until we could find suitable accommodations. After living 19 years of my life in Kamloops, whose city slogan was the “Tournament Capital of Canada” and experiencing the convenience of living in the metropolitan port city of Vancouver, Paul cautioned me that Fort McMurray possessed all the characteristics of a boom town: lack of cultural and social amenities; blue-collar tradesman securing wages comparable to that of a medical doctor; and poor infrastructure that created traffic congestion and increased the probability of accidents along the main arterial road, HWY 63 ( TravelBC, 2015; Davidsen, Deacon & Kiff, 2013, p.g 68). Herein was the first lie I began telling myself and others: Fort McMurray could be just as beautiful as Vancouver. After passing the ‘Welcome to Fort McMurray, We have the ENERGY’ sign, I was appalled to see that on Sept 14th 2003, there was so much snow on the ground that it had become a meridian which blocked the view of the oncoming lane of traffic. As we pulled into 7-Eleven for a cup of hot chocolate, I was shocked to observe that the loitering patrons were not my own kind; the everyday teenager. Instead there where prostitutes wearing six inch stiletto heels, men whose recently cashed paycheques were on hand to make a purchase, and intoxicated…
