Edward Marshall Boehm, Inc
Case: Edward Marshall Boehm, Inc
Edward Marshall Boehm, Inc. is a company that produces unique and high quality porcelain products mainly focusing on birds, flowers, and wildlife. The objective of the company is to raise awareness of Mr. Boehm’s artist talent, create appreciation and protection for threatened and vanishing species. Meanwhile, Mr. Boehm wants to build a business that could make them wealthy. There are two main problems facing by the company. First, the process of making these porcelain products is complicated and required elaborate technical skills, the company does not have enough skilled staffs and producing power to meet the demand from the market. Second, the company lacks of enough distribution channels to raise awareness of its brand and the uniqueness of its products.
At the current stage, the company has three series of porcelain in its product lines, which are priced from $100 to over $20,000. Each piece of porcelain sculpture requires a 52-step process. Some of products are sold out for years in advance, and it is difficult to anticipate which pieces might achieve this distinction. In addition, the company has only one distributor, Minton China, to distribute its products to some 175 retail outlets in the United States.
The company can try to reduce costs by using other materials at a lower cost, developing a faster production process, but the bottom line is since the most competitive advantage of the company is the uniqueness and high quality of the product, the company should preserve its quality instead of using cheaper materials or faster production time that may violates the value of its products.
In order to continue the business in the long run, the company should adapt the following changes. First, the company should hire more staffs and train them to produce the products in order to increase production of lower priced products. Meanwhile, it should find more distributors to raise awareness of the

Although the sales of the company have declined significantly their cost of goods sold has remained high, especially between 1994 and 1995 the company had a decline in sales and an increase in cost of goods sold. This is evidence the company is having problems passing costs to its consumers. The company is not very asset intensive and its decrease in total asset turnover can be due to their decrease in sales, however their rather low total asset turnover which is also decreasing from 2.1 to 1.5 shows their assets are not being used very efficiently. As a result of their sales decrease their Fixed Asset turnover also decreased from 7.0 to 5.4. The decrease in sales and increase in competition also means more shelf time for their inventory which has increased from 103 to 129, which makes Haefren Baum’s price cutting strategy questionable. The company is already experiencing a loss of revenue due to their lower prices; however this is not stimulating the number of different sales because the inventory is sitting in the…

Once this analysis is done, the company can devote more time and resources to the segments which have a brighter future for the company. The company faces continued pressure from economic events drilling down to tightening margins, I would recommend the company continue to seek and search for the next profitable business opportunity while reducing its capital expenditures and operational expenditures as necessary. Fe' Nix Del Sur

With the rise in popularity of not only the company Fe’nix del Sure but that also of the artifact industry, also came the creation and manipulation of many other companies and individuals that have started to not only try to enter the artifact market but develop fakes and replicas and try to pass them off as authentic pieces at a much lower price then that of Fe’Nix del Sur. With these lowered market prices Fe’nix of course struggles to be able to compete with their 100 percent pieces. Not only is the process of finding these authentic artifacts expensive but also having them authenticated tends to also be pricey for the company, which in turn causes the prices on their products to increase. The introduction of all of the fakes and replicas has lowered Fe’nix’s market share and gross sales as of late because they are unable to make a profit by lowering their prices to try and keep pace with these companies. This problem continues to grow and they will have to determine how they will handle the introduction of all the new competitors and products. How can they still offer authentic piece but be able to compete with the lowered prices of competitors?…
