EMANCIPATION QUESTIONS PART 1
Complete the answers to the questions from the handout on this document. After you have finished these questions, scroll down and answer the part 2 questions.
1. I think itʼs a fair appraisal because the Emancipation Proclamation didnʼt have an immediate effect on the slavery issue.
2. I do think a statement more like a preamble or Declaration of Independence would be more appropriate because it is more related in context and like a preamble, the
Emancipation Proclamation was an introduction in a sense, to the ending of slavery.
3. I think Lincoln didnʼt want to anger anyone or try to put himself over any one else because this was a very sensitive issue in the nation and he wanted everyone to support him.
4. Lincoln used emergency powers to maintain and protect his nation and keep the country as one.
5. He was willing to take action, also he didnʼt offer a plan and watched it all happen.
6. I donʼt think what the editor said was justified because if someone is loyal to the U.S. it is unjust to own them.
7. The emancipation proclamation was a huge step on the road to freedom because even though it didnʼt free all slaves, it freed most of them.

EMANCIPATION QUESTIONS PART 2
1. What was the purpose for which Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation?
He wanted to take control of the rebellion and after the battle of Antitem, where the north won, he thought it was a good move to get re-elected. Also, by making that proclamation he made the war about slavery first and foremost. This ensured that Britain and France would not enter the war and aid the South....the people of
Britain and France could not support a cause that supported slavery.
2. For what reason did Lincoln justify issuing the Proclamation?
He said it was an act of war. Since it freed slaves, it allowed them to serve as soldiers for the North in the Civil War, thus giving the North a better chance of winning the war.
3. How did Lincoln hope to maintain the freedom of persons held as slaves?
Abraham Lincoln hoped to maintain the freedom of persons held as slaves via the
Emancipation Proclamation. It proclaimed the freedom of slaves in the ten states then in rebellion, thus applying to 3.1 million of the 4 million slaves in the U.S..
4. What hopes does Lincoln mention in regard to the conduct of emancipated slaves?
Lincoln wants to allow the freed slaves to be in the army by letting them hold positions in forts and stations.

5. What consideration does Lincoln make regarding emancipated slaves and the United
States armed forces?
Lincoln considers allowing them to fight in the Army and putting them in different positions including vessels.
6. In your view, what purpose or advantage did Lincoln gain by announcing the
Proclamation in September of 1862, but not actually signing it until January of 1863?
The Emancipation Proclamation achieved nothing in its beginning, it was document that essentially freed the slaves of another country, The Confederate
States of America. It was law after the war so therefore slavery was over.
7. In your view, why did Lincoln only free sales “in territories in rebellion”? Why did he not take the logical next step and free all of the slaves?
He hoped that it would bring an end to the rebellion in those territories, if those slaves were given what they were fighting for. He assumed that if he tried to wipe out slavery in one sweep it would end badly, so he took baby steps starting with the territories in rebellion.
8. Could Lincoln have taken other steps to provide unity in the North instead of freeing slaves? Explain your answer.
Late in 1861 he was trying to sell them on voluntary emancipation with federal financial compensation to cover their loss, beginning with Delaware.
Unfortunately, they didn't bite, and Lincoln gradually concluded that he had to and Constitutionally could do more.
9. In your opinion, does Lincoln deserve the title “Great Emancipator”? Explain your answer. Yes, and no.
Yes - Because he made the notion of a slave owning economy as beneath the ideals of goals of the United States. He did not originate this doctrine but as president, he had the power to pursue it with the force of government and the army. No - Because his Emancipation Proclamation applied only those slaves in states that were in rebellion against the Union. At the end of the Civil War, slavery was still legal in loyal Union states until Congress enacted a total prohibition against slavery. History isn't black and white, it has a lot of grey areas.

There were many instances where Lincoln made his beliefs on slavery very clear. Although he believed that it was morally wrong, he still did not believe that blacks should have the same rights as an american. He wanted them to be free. Just free somewhere else. During his presidency he tried very hard to do whatever needed to be done to preserve the Union. Lincoln restated this again in August of 1863 when he reminded people of the democratic party that the civil war was being fought in an effort to put the Union back together. Feelings on slavery did not matter but freeing slaves would make things easier because Confederate war effort would become more difficult.I march of 1862, Lincoln decided that it would be best to award states that freed their slaves with money. With this, people were not able to say that they didn't receive money for getting rid of slavery. This was simply a bribe though. He was not forcing anyone to abolish slavery and it was completely the state's decision.…

The first line is referring to the Emancipation Proclamation. President Abraham Lincoln issued this particular doctrine on January 1, 1863. The doctrine declared, “All persons held as slaves… [within the rebellious states] …are, and henceforward shall be free”. The Emancipation Proclamation was limited in various ways; for example, it only applied to certain states that had seceded from the Union, leaving slave states untouched that were “loyal” to the government. The doctrine also exempted parts of the Confederacy that had already become compromised by the Northern parts of America. More importantly, the freedom that the Proclamation insinuated depended upon Union military victory. Even though the doctrine did not end slavery, it opened the…

The Emancipation Proclamation was a major decision on our leaders parts, the issue of slavery had long been discussed and argued over. To the point, that the South ceded from the United States to attempt to keep slavery and soon raised arms to protect the right to hold slaves. At first, the president (Lincoln) resisted pressure to make the abolition of slavery a union war goal. He insisted that under the constitution he was bound only to preserve and protect the nation. Lincoln explained this view in a letter to Horace Greeley, an abolitionist newspaper editor. Although Lincoln personally opposed slavery, he did not believe that he had the legal authority to abolish it. He also worried about the effect such as an action would have on the loyalty of the border states. However Lincoln recognized the importance of slavery to the South's war effort. Every slave working in a field or factory freed a white southerner to the fire a gun at union soldiers. Gradually, he came to the regard slavery as one more strategy for winning the war.…
