Etiquette speech
I. Introduction
A. Etiquette can consist of many different aspects such as ways of eating, talking, and ways people interact with each other.
B. Etiquette is about addressing each other in the correct manner and giving an individual the respect they deserve.
C. At a young I and probably many of us was taught some of the Etiquette basics, this is why I think this why I’m a good criteria for this topic
D. A preview of what I’m going to speak about first I’ll give you a brief background information of etiquette, then I’ll tell you why it’s important, and finally I’ll give you some examples.
II. History
A. Ptah-hotep
1. One of the first etiquette/wisdom books was written around the time of 2400 B.C. by Ptah-hotep known as The Maxims of Ptahhotep or also called Instruction of Ptahhotep.
2. In the introduction of “The Maxims” ptahhotep states he’s reasons for writing this book was, because he was getting old and he wanted to give his son something to help advise him on topic such as manners, traditions, and wisdom when he was no longer there, and to have knowledge to pass down to the family.
3. We know this because he wrote “…to teach him the traditions, and to speak properly, so the other court children can learn by example..”
B. Where Etiquette origins from
1. However, the action of Etiquette began in the French royal courts in the 1600s and 1700s under King Louis XIV when the nobles who lived at royal court did not work, and so they developed elaborate social customs mostly to avoid becoming bored.
2. The word ‘Etiquette’ came from an old French word meaning “ticket or card”, in which the ticket or card would indicate the proper dress code, expected behavior, and dining instructions for all who attended court. This code of behavior spread to other European courts and eventually was adopted by the upper classes throughout the Western world.
C. After world war one it wasn’t as important since people were focused on the war.
