Flowers in the Attic: Response

Flowers in the attic This summer I read the story Flowers in the attic by V.C Andrew. It was a story of a very happy family that was struck with disaster when their husband and father dies in a car accident and they lose everything. Momma decides to seek help from her mother and father (very rich and old) who disowned her when she married her husband. Since she was disowned she decides to hide her four children from her father. He is on his death bed and is likely to die soon so she decides to put her kids Chris, Cathy, Cory, and Carrie in the attic of the mansion until her father dies and she inherits the money, with the help of her mother. She tells them that they will only be in the attic for a few days but as days pass so do the weeks then weeks turn into months and months into years.
Grandmother visits them in the attic every morning to take them food and drink for the day. But she is not like the loving and caring grandmother that we all know. She despises Chris, Cathy, Cory, and Carrie and says that they are sinners and they are all damned to hell. She gives them a bible to read every day and in that room with the stairs to the attic there is a picture of hell, which they think was placed there purposefully. Momma visits them regularly and brings them gifts such as clothes and toys and books. But just as their days get longer so does the time in between mommas visits and soon they hardly see her at all. They make the most of what they can and they play in the attic and turn it into a place they go to but would rather not.

A quote from the story that really stuck out to me was, “Color all days blue, but save one for black.” This quote stuck out to me because it symbolizes that they don’t have the best days in the attic but then little Cory dies and they realize that day is the black day. It is the black day because Cory was the smallest of the kids and when he dies everything turns black for them. Their days in the room without him just remind them
