Freedom of Speech and Expression- a Precious but Powerful Right
I have a voice and I’m not afraid to use it. Today freedom of speech and expression is a given right to those of us living in South Africa but there are still countries where this right is unheard of!
I am fortunate to have been born into a democratic South Africa and to have the luxury of growing up in a home where I am able to exercise my opinion and have my voice heard. Freedom of speech and expression is one if the most precious rights individuals have.
I believe each person is entitled to his or her opinion but also has the responsibility to exercise this right with caution towards others.
Freedom of speech refers to the right of the individual to express his views about matters of interest to him or her. I personally cannot picture a world where we are not allowed or entitled to voice our opinions freely over a matter which we see as important. I see no purpose then of having a mouth and voice if we are unable to speak and express our feelings.
I think being a Christian has a lot to do with me wanting to express myself and wanting to tell others how wonderful Christ is. In Matthew 28:18-20 Jesus says to His disciples “Go into the world and preach the gospel to all creation.” I think for this reason freedom is important to me as no one is able to force their religious beliefs on me, because I have my own opinion and beliefs and am allowed to express them.
I began to reflect on this quote by Søren Kierkegaard stating, “People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they never use.” And realized the truth behind it. In my opinion, many of us have certain feelings or opinions with regards to a matter of personal interest. We then voice this opinion or speak badly of others with a different opinion instead of keeping it to ourselves. I know how I feel thus I should respect how you feel, if I want my thoughts to be respected.
