As revealed earlier, cloning humans has a high failure rate, because there are many barriers put in by nature to prevent an “unnatural” event from occurring. These barriers can happen anytime during the cloning process. For example, the enucleated egg might not be compatible with the donor nucleus, the newly transferred nucleus may not grow and develop properly, the step where the embryo is implanted into the surrogate could fail, or the pregnancy may fail. Even if the pregnancy succeeds, there is no guarantee that the clone will act like a clone unless the right genes are activated. In a transferred human cloning, the scientist has to re-program the nucleus and force it to pretend as if it belongs in an early embryonic stage. If the nucleus is not programmed properly or completely, the embryo will more than likely become abnormal or die. Now, if the embryo manages to pass all of the post-zygotic barriers, “there is a possibility that the [fully developed] cloned individual might carry certain abnormalities…” causing them to live a shorter life span than expected (Wickman). In the movie Gattaca the main character Anton was discriminated against because of his gene makeup. Anton never even had a chance in the society in Gattaca because the potential employees of companies were not tested on their skills or knowledge but on their physical and mental possibilities. Just because his parents decided that he would come into the world naturally instead of through gene therapy or alteration. Terms like “faith birth'; and “invalid'; were used against Anton. I think gene therapy has it promises, but when used in the fashion as it was used in the Gattaca I think its progress should be carefully monitored. Right now sheep and other animals are being cloned. Soon primates and Humans could be cloned. I think we should further investigate human cloning for research on the parenting process and other physiological experiments that can only be used now on identical twins separated at birth. Human genetic engineering is the process by which the human genome is being modified and manipulated in order to remove or select certain genes. Moreover, traits that are desirable can be selected, and preventing the genetic causes of diseases is possible. Human genetic engineering, as a new field, has raised a lot of questions and ethical issues. I argue about where we should put the limits for our genetic editing. In the last three decades, a great advance in genetic research and biotechnology has occurred. Max Born said in his essay, "Reflection," "But suddenly, about three hundred years ago, an explosion of mental activity occurred: modern science and technology were born. Since then, they have increased at an ever growing rate, probably faster than exponentially, and are now transforming the human world beyond recognition" (209). The most prevalent and observable argument to support cloning lies in the form of cures. For centuries people have suffered from the undesirable effects of genetic diseases such as Tay-Sachs and Cystic Fibrosis.
