Gary Leon Ridgway: the Green River Killer

When you think of serial killers, Charles Manson and Ted Bundy may come to mind. However in the fall of November 2001, the world was introduced to a man who made both Manson and Bundy look like boy scouts, Gary Leon Ridgway. Ridgway, also know as the Green River Killer, confessed to a total of forty-eight murders, securing him the title of the most heinous serial killer in U.S. history. For over two decades a special task force questioned witnesses, compiled evidence and developed a profile which would ultimately lead to the capture and conviction of Ridgway who some refer to as the Lucifer himself. Gary Leon Ridgway, the second of three sons, was born as to tom and Mary Ridgeway on February 18, 1949. During his childhood, Ridgway witnessed his mother physically abuse and dominate his father. Ridgway’s father was a bus driver who drove a route along the “strip” near a local airport. The strip was a common hangout for area prostitutes. Although Ridgway was not especially close to his father, he recalls his father having a strong dislike for prostitutes. Those who knew Ridgway remember him as a polite quiet gentleman who was very friendly.. Ridgway hunting, fishing, working in the yard, chopping wood and getting away with his wife in their RV. He scavenged for junk to sell at garage sales. He read the Bible at work and tried to save others by continually talking about church and the savior. Ridgway worked as a painter for a trucking company for most of his adult life. Amongst his co-workers Ridgway would often provide tips on how to pick up prostitutes. It was reported despite being married that Ridgway solicited prostitutes on and off for twenty years. Although Ridgway had two failed marriages and a son he barely saw, people saw him as an average Joe.
