Hard-Work Personal Statement

I value the qualities of hard-work and tenacity in the face of adversity and aim to employ kindness and compassion in all my endeavors. As a physician, my goal is to practice general internal medicine in medically underserved areas in the United States. I am also passionate about public policy and education and aim to utilize the skills and experiences gained as a physician in order to contribute to these fields. Besides medicine, I also enjoy traveling, cooking and music. I have been part of my school choirs since seventh grade. Furthermore, I belong to a region in India that was colonized by the Portuguese and thus, I am Roman Catholic by religion and Indian by ethnicity. Hence, diversity has been a constant theme in my life, which was further enhanced by my exposure to a diverse population of people when I came to the United States at the age of 12. Consequently, I possess a real appreciation for diversity and a passion for understanding the lives and perspectives of all people.
In addition to challenging my time management skills, taking organic chemistry taught me to adapt to various teaching styles. The significant time I invested into this class took time away from other classes such as physics. Nonetheless, early in the semester, I realized that my usual methods of attending lectures and studying from the textbook and notes were insufficient. Therefore, I started seeking out online videos and tutorials as well as help offered from the learning centers at Rutgers University which provided me with visual and alternative methods for understanding the concepts. Consequently, I was able to get at least a B or B+ in these class in the fall semester and improve upon these scores in the following semester.
