Hello my name is Henry Ford. I was born on July 30, 1863. Unlike many of you I was born on my family’s farm in Dearborn, Michigan. When I was only 15 years old, my father gave me a pocket watch. As soon as I got this watch, I took it apart and reassembled it, I know you’re thinking “Wow, this guy’s smart”, I guess you could say that. As soon as my friends and neighbors found out about this, they all came to me wanting me to fix their watches. I guess you could say that this was the “start” of it all!
I did not really like the farm environment or working on the farm so when I was 16 years old, I took an Apprenticeship as a machinist in Detroit. I then had to return to farming so that I could support my wife and my newly born son, Edsel. In 1891, I stopped farming and was then hired as an engineer for the Edison Illuminating Company, owned by the famous inventor Thomas Edison. Shortly after, I got promoted to the Chief Engineer. While I was doing this, I also developed my plans for the “horseless carriage”. Then in 1896, I constructed my first model. I called it the Ford Quadricycle. I presented this plan to Thomas Edison, and he loved it and in fact wanted me to create another one and an even better version!
In 1903, I established Ford Motor Company. In October of 1908, we introduced the famous Model T. In 1914, I helped create the moving assembly line for mass production
Some interesting things that you may not know about, but were going on around this time were the fact that I did not want World War I to happen at all. In fact I even funded a peace ship “The Oscar II” to Europe. I was also anti-Semite, so I started supporting a weekly newspaper called The Dearborn Independent.
The Model T had a major impact on society. I wanted to “build a car for the great multitude." Even though we only
