Holiday Blues
Holidays filled with fun, family outings, shopping, Christmas Trees, and bringing in the New Year. It is not always like this for others. Holidays can be a very depressing time for others. When families get together you might want to pay attention to that loved one that maybe still grieving or going through life's blows. It is hard to get into the grove of things when you look around and see that their is someone missing this year.
Life is not the same without that person or persons. You are not so happy about another year going by and you haven't made any significant progress in your life. It seems that nothing anyone can do to get you over this silent pain you are going through.

Counseling could be one way of coping with this loss and trying to fill this void in ones life. Anti-depressants is another alternative. The best way I have found to beat the blues in combination of the above,if that is needed, is to bring yourself back to something you love to do. Be it listening to music, writing memoirs, singing, going out to a comedy. Just get yourself involved and loose yourself in your favorite past time to help alleviate the pressure.

Remember not everyone is happy during the holidays. Try and look out for one another. You never know; all that person really needs to know is that someone has noticed them and had shown them that they really care. It is not only the teenagers we need to watch. We also need to watch the people that fall within the middle age group.

So during the holiday fun and cheer look around to notice others that are not so happy. Cheer them up and show them that you

As of December 13th the 11s, 12s, 13s, 14s, and 15s team have all of their presents donated. The 16s, 17s, and 18s age groups are still working on getting their presents in. The young age groups having their presents in sooner was expected and happens every year due to their guardians taking on all of the responsibilities. As the age groups get older the players seem to be busier with tournaments, school, and recruiting and it is difficult for them to find time to go shopping. Due to this there were a few modifications made. Jenna recently met with the 16s, 17s, and 18s teams after one of their practices and explained that if a player is too busy to shop for their gifts they have the option to give Jenna fifty dollars and she will buy their presents for them. This helped the older teams tremendously, almost every player had their gifts in by the next week thanks to Jenna. The 18s team even wrote encouraging and motivating letters to their “adopted” children from Santa to help them stay positive through hard times in their life. I am so impressed with the amount of gifts donated and the extra effort put in by the 18s team. There were at least thirty presents for each family. They even began to run out of space in the gift’s storage room. I am so happy to be a part of Tejasmas and to be able to make someone else’s Christmas…

Certainly, many believe the Grinch’s heart is identical to mine, and when it comes to Christmas, we share uniform emotions. However, the Grinch and I have unalike reasons for despising the season. As told in “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”, no one truly knows why the Grinch hates the entire Christmas season, but my friends know my reasons for hating the season. Sometimes it’s the stress of gifting, the unbearable runny noses, or occasionally the useless gifts I try my hardest to be thankful for. I’m an exceedingly different individual compared to my friends and family, but I am fond of my unique personality.…

All can relate to that one special time of the year, Christmas, when whole families unite and spend hours endlessly sharing stories, making memories, and of course, opening presents! What happens though, when all of the sentimental value of Christmas is replaced solely with physical value, the gifts? What would Christmas be like then? Richard Rodriguez takes the readers through one of his annual Christmases and brings to light, through his thoughts, the disconnect that exists between himself, his siblings, and his parents. Rodriguez’ chronological presentation of events with flashbacks, short, abrupt syntax, light-hearted attention to detail and concerned tone contribute to suggest his worried attitude toward his family.…

I could tell people this is why I don’t try or want to do anything but I don’t because I know that my grandma would never want. I feel that anyone going through the loss of a friend or family member should always think of the positive outlook instead of the negative. Looking at the negative side of it can create all different kinds of problems for a person. If you look at the positive you can use that as motivation to do anything in life. Life can get hard but you can never let the hardships depict and destroy your life. You aren’t on this earth for a long time so you have to make the best of…

The grief that comes with such a loss is very challenging, but even though the sadness may never truly go away, most people can move on and live a life that has purpose and meaning again. That is not the case for someone suffering from Complicated Grief (Fromson, 2013). Complicated grief is defined by Nam in his paper as, “a condition in which emotional reactions after the death of a loved one are prolonged and are accompanied by complicating thoughts, behaviors, and dysfunctional emotional regulation” (2016). “Complicated Grief is characterized by reactive distress to the death (e.g., disbelief or bitterness) and disruption is social relationships or identity” (Ghesquiere, A.R., 2015). For someone suffering from this psychological disorder, there is no possibility of having a life with happiness again (Fromson, 2013). They cannot integrate the feelings they are experiencing into daily life and the grief is always front and foremost. Complicated Grief inhibits them from living a normally again after experiencing the traumatic loss. Unlike normal grief were symptoms gradually start to fade over time, with Complicated Grief the grief symptoms linger and can even get worse (Shear,…

Holidays are always celebrated no matter religion, beliefs, or culture. Some are recognized more than others but none two are as highly recognized like the cherished Christmas and Thanksgiving holidays. The pair may seem vastly different, as they are two completely separate occasions, but in actuality they do share very similar attributes. Many of the similarities and differences are about to be explained, so here goes.…

It is not a breakup, you don’t just wake up on more morning and not feel the pain anymore. Every day, I consciously make the decision to get out of my bed and live. Often I would rather stay under the covers and sob for the brother I never got to know. It’s so easy to get caught up in my sadness and choose to hide from happiness, but that isn’t the point of loss. I am a firm believer that God does not take anything, or anyone, away without the intentions of a greater purpose. Michael changed my life. He has had an integral role in who I am. He changed my parents lives. He showed them an unconditional love. He changed my sisters lives in the same way that he did mine. Michael’s life had meaning as did his death. Hundreds of people attended his funeral, some of them complete strangers. I know that he impacted their lives as well, in a way that he might not have been able to do otherwise. There is a reason for…

Christmas is one of the most incredible times of the year; snow on the ground, a warm fire in the living room, and twinkly lights around every turn. When I was young, I loved Christmas. Toys and treats had me in a daze for almost a week straight. I was a typical kid, and my focus during any holiday was, “What do I get? Who brought me presents?”. I never realized the true meaning of why we have holidays, other than presents, until I was seventeen years old. As I’ve started to see my family less and my co-workers more, I understand that the true meaning of holidays in general, is to spend time with our loved ones. Taking my new found wisdom into account, my opinion of the “best holiday of the year” has changed from Christmas to Thanksgiving. My views, including favorite holiday, have changed because my focus on what’s important has matured.…

Some people laugh and some people cry. Other people shut everyone out. Not one person is the same. Grief also changes people as an individual. It changes their outlook on life, their personality and the way they think of themselves. I know because of what I went through. I changed into a completely different person. Sometimes I think that maybe his death helped me in a way that no one will get. I think it continues to help me to better understand how I react in traumatic situations and what I have to do to cope. This quote helped me continue to find my way to move on, “But grief is a walk alone. Others can be there, and listen. But you will walk alone down your own path, at your own pace, with your sheared-off pain, your raw wounds, your denial, anger, and bitter loss. You’ll come to your own peace, hopefully… but it will be on your own, in your own time.” (Cathy Lamb). Almost a year later, I still persevere to find my…

The grieving process is a painful life experience in which individuals cope in various ways. These people can go thru a stage where they don’t want to see or speak to anyone. As the holidays come closer my emotions start escalating. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years can be very exciting dates but also very thoughtful and saddening. Many times several things occur suddenly, not always good but not always bad. At times we aren’t prepared for anything else but good things to happen, without considering there is no sunshine without a little rain. Thanksgiving is right around the corner and it is about being thankful for anything we’ve had or have throughout our life. It isn’t about the material things “Oh because I just got a new iPhone, or a new iPad” it is much more than that.…
