Most hospitals have pastoral care that is available to patients while they are in the hospital. If patients do not want to be seen by hospital pastoral care, they should be encouraged to be visited their own spiritual leader, depending on what their religious beliefs are. Dunn (2010) uses the term healing environment to describe the environment that the hospital staff works in. She suggests that good deeds such as, staff going out of their way to assist patients or family members, positive comments, and anything else that goes above and beyond job descriptions, should be recognized and posted where everyone can see it (Dunn, 2010). At the hospital where this author works, most of the units in the hospital have boards where good deeds are displayed. There are also boxes that patients and families can put cards in to recognize a staff member of their choice. Unit directors also go around and survey patients about their stay and the care that they are receiving. Patients can take the opportunity to recognize extraordinary staff members at that time also. Today in placement I was asked if I would be able to assist Mrs X with personal care and dressing. Mrs X has advanced dementia and takes a lot of prompting to do simple tasks on her own, such as washing her face. Mrs X is fully mobile and needs a lot of support to hold her concentration on particular tasks or she is more likely to be distracted and wander off. Caring for those in need who cannot help themselves is an incredible responsibility and I would ensure that all of my residents were cared for in the manner in which I would expect for myself. In my aunt’s case, my father had to endure many trips to the court house to obtain power of attorney to be able to set up physical care after her hospital release. My aunt was in a very fragile state and was not mentally or physically able to speak for herself. In retrospect, I realize that this process was eye opening for me. The challenges that my father faced to access her medical and financial records was daunting. Moreover, he had to keep records of all of the information, pay her taxes, report to the court and relay her medical information doctors, as needed. It was a relief to him when he was able to secure a worthy long-term care facility. My aunt was blessed to have my father and pass away, peacefully, at the age of one-hundred.
