Identifying Learner's Needs
Cambridge CELTA Written Assignment 1: Focus on the Learners
Part A: Student profile:
Personal Information:

Previous Language Learning Experience:
Chien has been studying English for two years, of which only the last three months have been at English teaching centres; the rest of her English learning has been self-taught. Because of this, her pronunciation and listening skills are not as good as they should be for an intermediate level student. She is conscious of this fact and this negatively affects her participation in open class feedback after reading or listening activities, as she does not feel confident enough to speak out. Nevertheless, she wants to improve her spoken English and works enthusiastically in student to student conversation based activities. Before coming to xxxxx to study, she attended another institution for two months where she had a native speaker as a teacher, who focused, mostly on grammar, listening and writing skills, but less on speaking and reading skills.
Chien has been studying the language because she likes it, and one of her goals is "to learn English well". This intrinsic motivation1 is what first moved her to study the language by herself and, later, to join language teaching centres to improve her overall language skills. Her secondary motivation is an instrumental motivation2: her goal of going to Japan and doing a Master 's course at one of the universities that offer this programme in English.
In class, Chien prefers reading comprehension, speaking and listening activities, and playing games. She wants the teacher to correct all the mistakes she makes when speaking, after the activity has finished and to have all her writing mistakes corrected; she thinks that this will help her develop her productive skills and achieve the level of English she wants to reach. Based on my observations of teaching practice and on her comments on her preferred class activities, I think Chien 's preferred learning style is a

Learners from different background and surroundings have different perceptions towards learning English. Their surroundings contribute to their more or less of understanding of towards English language learning. From urban to rural settings, most schools are in charge for educating English language to students. In relation to that matter, teachers of English language in schools are also facing several difficulties in teaching English in the classroom.…

Harmer explains that the lead in stage is “where we engage students with the topic of the reading and we try to activate their schema” or “pre-existent knowledge of the world” (Harmer, 2007:271) Questions and pictures or visual prompts are two of the best ways to elicit interest and discussion at this stage. This particular reading uses a question as the heading; “Is beauty in the eye of the beholder?” and is also visually supported by two pictures. Hence I chose to combine the Lead in and Prediction stages into one stage using the heading (question) and two accompanying photos as the prompts for predicting the topic of the reading, creating interest and setting the context. Harmer explains that “prediction is vitally important if we want students to engage fully with the text” (Harmer, 2007:271)…

Rine says that although she studied English, having someone to practice with was always a problem. Now, because she wants to do her Post Grad at UKZN she feels that, for her to be understood better, she needs to communicate effectively, and this class at Durban Language Centre was her way of getting to speak more English. She likes to learn English by speaking to her friends, writing and looking at pictures. With the help of a Learning styles questionnaire, (Borrowed from the DLC Celta course) and two letters which I received from her (responding to a letter I wrote to her), I determined that she has very high interpersonal, linguistic (at times her pronunciation needed some help) and visual intelligence. This proved to me that she learns best when she is talking, seeing and hearing English while she is amongst people (maybe from being around staff and teaches at the DLC helps) and other students.…

For this Skills-related assignment, my choice of authentic reading material is “Few Places with Better Stories”. from Asian Geographic magazine (no 78 issue 1/2011, pages 30 and 35). As this magazine is widely read and it is also a popular TV channel, the students will be able to relate to it easily. I decided to use this article as I think it is appropriate for English Language learners at the Intermediate level. The article deals with photography which can be a hobby or passion for many adult learners and hence they can identify with the author. It is also biographical, as the author narrates his experiences, thus the reader can bond with the narrator. This topic has a universal appeal and is not culturally biased. The article also has contemporary relevance as the author blends photography with nature, as the world is desperate to conserve it. “One test for useful reading might be to check how far tasks reflect real life uses of the same text. If a text is used in class in ways that are reasonably similar to real life, it is likely that the task will be effective” (Learning Teaching, Third edition 2011, Jims Scrivener, Macmillan)…

I've been learning English for nearly three years by now. Many years ago, the Chinese Education Authority decided that English should be a required course for The National College Entrance Exam and ever since children in China have to start learning English at the age of 6. Nevertheless, most of us won’t treat this language seriously until high school. The reason for this is that in order to get accepted by any of the colleges, senior high school students must pass TNCEE and that Exam requires fluent English skills. For me,learning English was a hard but rewarding process, from which I have gained so much fun that I would like to share in this essay.…

Muftah, married with four children, is a pleasant student who is struggling in class. Muftah did not receive any English in secondary school or university. He worked as a Physical Education teacher for two years, and then was employed with the Ministry of Youth and Sports for twenty years. In his years of employment, Muftah never needed to speak or write in English until about two years ago, when he started attending International House. He says that he is now learning English because he has a lot of time on his hands. Muftah prefers to study at home, not with friends. He says that he does not focus on reading or writing; but, he enjoys practicing his speaking skills with his fourteen year old son because that’s where he feels he needs improvement. Muftah sees this as an opportunity to bond with, and encourage, his son because Muftah never got this chance when he was younger. When asked if he is interested in working in a company in the future to maintain his English, he said that he will think about it.…
