Importance Of Observational Learning

My roommate has a habit of leaving the dishes out after eating. One Thursday afternoon, my friend and I ordered some Chinese. This food came in a cardboard container and we had to use our own bowls to eat the food. After we finished the sesame chicken and noodles I went to clean my dishes and went to bed. The next morning, I noticed that his bowl was still sitting out next to his bed. This bowl had all the dried-up ingredients stuck to the bowl. It also made the room smell like Chinese for longer than it needed to. He has done this since the beginning of the year. I have no idea as to where my roommate might have learned this. It could have been from either observational learning or vicarious conditioning. Observational learning is when the process is learned from watching a model. My roommate could have seen his dad do this a lot and mimicked him. Vicarious conditioning is the act of watching
It uses a stimulus before a reflex to see how the reflex is affected. My roommate would not change his behavior with the use of classical conditioning because it uses involuntary actions. My roommate voluntarily leaves his dishes next to his bed. If I wanted my roommate to change the habit and wash the dishes I will have to use operant conditioning. Operant conditioning the act of reinforcing or punishing behavior to strengthen or weaken voluntary actions.
My roommate has been doing this since the beginning of the semester before the intervention. I hope that after the intervention he starts being more conscious of it and drops it to three times a week. Lucky for me, my roommate also has a low self-esteem and loves compliments. I will compliment him every time he does the dishes without being asked to. If he were to forget I will withhold the compliment and tell him to do the dishes without any praise. This will cause him to associate the good feeling from praise to doing the dishes without being asked
