Input and Output Devices
A THOROUGH OVERVIEW OF INPUT AND OUTPUT DEVICES
PRESENTED BY THE MEMBERS OF GROUP B COMPUTER SCIENCE DPT.

INTRODUCTION
• The I/O devices as parts of the components of an information processing system or a computer system are those devices which enables the computer system to communicate with the outside world. As we all know from the concept of communications in English language that communication is said to have being completed only when the encoder (sender) must have received a feedback from the decoder (other user), this can only be possible only when there are good and effective communication gadgets to help fascinate this process. • Now, back to the concept of electronic information processing system (Computer system), we all know that communication between the computer system and the outside world (user) would be almost impossible if there are no adequate console I/O devices to enable the user send their commands (data) into the computer system for processing and also to get feedback (i.e. already processed data) through a good working console output device (monitor).

DEFINITION OF TERMS
• • INPUT DEVICES: These are those devices that enable the user to send data or commands into the computer for processing. OUTPUT DEVICES: These are those devices that fetch the user’s information or already processed data from the computer main-memory (RAM) through the console output device (monitor).
I/O DEVICES: These are those devices that enable the computer to communicate with the outside world.

CONSOLE INPUT: These refer to those indispensable input devices that must be present in any computer system. e.g. Keyboard and mouse. CONSOLE OUTPUT: These refer to those indispensable output devices that must be present in any computer system. e.g. Monitor. Since there are so many I/O devices, we can now classify them into the following categories: Input Device and Output Devices, and also highlight their principle of operations, usage and

Typically this constitutes an interface for communicating with the device, through the specific computer bus or communications subsystem that the hardware is connected to, providing commands to and/or receiving data from the device, and on the other end, the requisite interfaces to the operating system and software applications. It is a specialized hardware-dependent computer program which is also operating system specific that enables another program, typically an operating system or applications software package or computer program running under the operating system kernel, to interact transparently with a hardware device, and usually provides the requisite interrupt handling necessary for any necessary asynchronous time-dependent hardware interfacing…

Input devices capture information from source documents and enable its transfer to the system’s information processing component. These devices often involve converting data on source documents from written or electronic form to a form usable for the system. Journal entries, both electronic and paper based, are a type of input device. Keyboards, scanners, and modems are some of the most common input devices in practice today. For example, bar code readers capture code numbers and transfer them to the organization’s computer for processing. Moreover, a scanner can capture writing samples and…
