As a prerequisite to writing my Individual paper for Orientation to Exceptional Child class, I interviewed Latoya Pearson, who is a Special Education teacher at Homewood High School here in Homewood, Alabama. Mrs. Pearson attended The University of Alabama where she majored in Psychology and minored in Biology. Mrs. Pearson began working at Homewood High School in 2006 with an emergency teacher’s certification in Special Education. Mrs. Pearson later received a Master's in Special Education in 2008 from The University of Montevallo. Mrs. Pearson started the interview by asking what field of education I was pursuing and why I chose this field. I explained to Mrs. Pearson that I am pursuing a Master’s in Special Education from The University of Phoenix. I told Mrs. Pearson that I chose this field because I wanted to pursue a career where I would have the largest impact on someone's life. I also mentioned that I have always been aware of kids being mislabeled and placed into special education classes who may not necessary need the service. I know that I have the patience and creativity to not only help special needs kids but to help identify those who are being displaced into special education as well. I further explained the purpose of this interview is to understand the responsibilities of teachers and support staff, classroom management techniques, and how the environment impacts students at her school. Firstly, I asked Mrs. Pearson asked about the responsibilities of teachers and support staff at her school for the special education program. Mrs. Pearson stated that her school used inclusion model to integrate special needs kids with general education kids. Mrs. Pearson works with a total of three teachers throughout her school day. One teacher and Mrs. Pearson use both Team Teach and One Teach, One Drift. Mrs. Pearson and the general education teacher share the teaching responsibilities and also provide specialized, differentiated lessons for students with

    At 1:00 p.m. I entered into Evoline C. West Elementary school on Thursday, July 12 2012 for an interview with Mrs. Yolanda Lawrence.     I had the pleasure of visiting Mrs. McCotter’s Autistic classroom. I arrived at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, November 27th. Her classroom is at Ealy Elementary in West Bloomfield, which has a wonderful special education program. I chose to observe in an autistic classroom because it is something I had never experienced before until now. The classroom was incredibly nice and everyone was so welcoming! The classroom is arranged with a variety of stations. There is the play station, the movement station, their independent work stations, and a table and chairs. There were three paraprofessionals along with Mrs. McCotter working with the students. There are six students in the classroom, however only five were present that day. The ages range from 4 - 5. There are five boys and one girl in the classroom. Three of those students can work independently, while three of the students need one-on-one work. Five students were Caucasian and one was Hispanic.     I interviewed a special education teacher who has taught at North Tonawanda High School for 25 years. Her current caseload involves two classes of resource room in which all students have an Individual Education Plan (IEP). They have classifications of learning disabled, emotionally disturbed, other health impairment, and hearing impaired. They are all also enrolled in general education classes and some integrated co-teaching classes. In the resource room she works on their IEP goals, homework, study skills and reviews content from their general education classes. Most of these students have low average to above average IQ's. She also has two 15:1 Pre-Algebra classes in which all students have IEP's and are below average in their math skills and IQ's. These students are classified as learning disabled, emotionally disturbed and intellectually disabled. Many of these students also go to 15:1 classes for their other core courses. Her other teaching period is an educational support class which is a building level service and includes students with IEP's and 504 plans.     For students with special needs and parents of children with disabilities, having a principal who supports inclusion is beneficial when it comes to receiving quality services for special needs children. According to a survey of 408 elementary schools in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania "about 1 in 5 principals' attitudes towards inclusion are positive while most are uncertain" (Praisner, 2003, p.135). The survey studied principals' attitudes towards inclusion, as well as, their amount of training in special education and experience with children with disabilities. The study indicated that principals who have positive experiences with students with disabilities and are familiar with the concepts of special education are more likely to have a positive attitude towards inclusion. Variation in placement of special needs students resulted from different attitudes. Therefore, principals with positive attitudes proved likely in placing students with disabilities in the least restrictive environment. Seemingly, the principal's view on inclusion affects not only the child with the disability and the parents of that child but teachers, as well as, the community.…
