IT320 Unit 1
Describe each of the seven layers of the OSI model.

• Layer 1 is the Physical Layer. The job of the physical layer is to format the signal according to mechanical electrical and functional parameters
• Layer 2 is the Data Link Layer. It is used to tie the network protocol to the physical medium
• Layer 3 is the Network Layer. It assigns source and destination IP addresses it also assigns which port to forward the network.
• Layer 4 is the Transport Layer. This layer is responsible for interfacing the higher order layer with the lower layers.
• Layer 5 is the Session Layer. This layer establishes and monitors communication between two end devices. IT ensures both devices are talking to the application layer.
• Layer 6 is the Presentation Layer. It is translating and presenting the data to the user in a readable format.
• Layer 7 is the Application Layer. This end user interacts with the application layer when creating a document.

2. What are some networking troubleshooting tools? Describe each tools purpose and what it can tell you about the network/potential problem The Seven Layer OSI model is a great troubleshooting tool. If you work your way up thru the different layers you can actually narrow down the problem and quickly solve it. You can begin at either end of the model but I always start at the first layer. By quickly checking the Physical Layer, where most of the problems lie, you can solve most problems with connection issues. As you work up the layers you can narrow down where the problem might be.

Studying the seven layers of the OSI design, a decision to be taken is that the layer three, also referred to as the network layer is the one which WAN protocols operates on. The network layer carries out regular tasks as well as pinpoints end-to-end addressing and routing datagrams (Regan, 2004). There exists a unit known as brouter that some layers incorporate which works like a router and a bridge. Routers and switches work on layers 2-4 (data link layer, network layer as well as transport layer). As mentioned earlier, on layer two of the OSI model, network layer, is the place where the addressing and routing is carried out. On the transport layer of the OSI model is the place where the flow control and mistake handling works. Lastly, on layer four the synchronizations and assemblies are completed.…

The reason for picking answer A and D is because they are the only that makes sense. The purpose of the transport layer takes a large amount of packet or data and sends it on the network and break it into smaller pieces on the source host. Then, the network layer take the same data or packet and reassemble them for the destination host on the network.…

The Network Layer is accountable for implementing a logical addressing scheme and for transporting the packets from one end to the other end. The network layer can be connectionless or it can be connection oriented. This layer is also responsible for breaking larger packets up for delivery depending on the media this is known as packet switching. These protocols include Apple talk DDP, IP, and IPX.…
