Lab 1: Observation of Chemical Changes

Name: Tyler Lee
Lab Partners: none
Date of Experiment: Feb 26 2015
Location: My House
Course Number: CHE111

Abstract:
The point of this lab was to test and observe chemical changes when mixing chemicals together and also through heating chemicals.

Experiment and Observations:
The experiment performed in the first part of this lab was to mix various chemical solutions together and then observe and record the chemical changes, also if a chemical change occurred at all. This was very interesting to me since some of the chemicals I thought were going to react didn’t, while some I thought were going to have no change suddenly changed color or texture.

The observations I made were recorded with the lab manual data table 1 as a guide as to which chemicals to use. A total of eight chemicals were mixed together on this part.

The experiment performed in the second part of the lab was heating 4 different chemical substances (s) and observing the changes made to them. Also determining if a chemical change had occurred. One test was performed with the substances in the tubes and another with the chemicals outside of the tubes and over the open flame.

The observations I made were recorded in the data table 2 and located in the questions section of this lab report.

Data Table 2
Chemical
Initial Observation
Heating Observation
Burning Observation
Mg
Looks like small flakes of silver
Turned bright red and obviously to a very high temp.
Turned bright red and gave off gas
Zn
Much bigger and sturdier than magnesium, although very similar in look (besides size).

Completely melted and then solidified into a new form.
Continued to melt
CuCO3
Green powder
Turned dark black instantly as if it was completely burning
Again turned dark black
Cu(NO3)2
Looked like aqua and navy blue glitter mixed together
Fizzled and looked like it was turning into a gaseous solution
Sizzled, started to turn into gaseous state.

Finding out the physical and chemical change in matter. There was seven different substances that were being tested; Mossy Zinc (Zn), Magnesium (Mn), Copper (Cu), Magnesium Oxide (MgO), Copper II Nitrate (Cu(NO3)2), Copper II Carbonate (CuCO3) and Sodium Chloride (NaCl). There were four test tubes set up for the experiment. Each substance was divided amongst the four test tubes. The first test tube was being observed at its natural state and then it was held over a Bunsen burner to a boil and observed when it was heated up. The second test tube, which already had the substance being tested, was then added with a little cold water. I recorded my observation in the chart below. Test tube two was then held over the flame and waited for a physical and chemical change. With a glass stirring rod the substance in test tube two was cooled off and mixed around and placed on a piece of red and blue litmus paper. I waited a minute to see if there was any change to the litmus paper and then recorded my results. Test tube three was mixed with the compound and Hydrochloric acid. Most of the substances that were being tested had a physical or chemical change with the HCI. Lastly, test tube four which contained a new piece of a substance was mixed with Sodium Hydrochloric Acid. After each compound the test tubes were cleaned thoroughly and set up for the next substance that was being tested. This was repeated seven times.…

For this laboratory experiment I followed the detailed procedures outline in the Labpaq manual by P. Jeschofnig, LP-0125-CK-01. (Jeschofnig, Peter., Ph.D., "Physical and Chemical Properties." General College Chemistry. Englewood, CO: Hands on Lab Inc., 0. 65-71. Print.) First, I followed all safety measures as outlined therein. After assembling all the necessary supplies and equipment needed to conduct this experiment, I began the lab experiment by identifying physical properties : the color and odor for each substances (a, b, c, d, e, f & g) by observing and smelling each substance then notating my findings. (See excel worksheet which identifies each substance tested in this experiment.) I then added each chemical a, b, c, d, e, f & g separately to a test tube and tested the effect of heat by holding it over a fire source. I observed to see if there was any change in color, conduction of heat or gas. Second, I added each chemical separately a, b, c, d, e, f, g to a test tube and notated the effect of cold water. Third, I added water to each chemical separately a, b, c, d, e, f, g to a test tube and notated the effect of hot water by holding it over a fire source until a boiling point was reached. I noted any observations observed such as bubbling, heat, conduction, gas etc. Fourth, after allowing the solution to cool down from the prior step, I tested the pH of each chemical using red…
