Lactose Lab Report
The two factors that we will be testing in this experiments are: Lactase Enzyme and Lactose. Lactase is a protein located in the human small intestine, while lactose is a term to define the sugar found in milk. Milk is a substance that contains nutrients necessary for our bodies, however, some people are unable to consume lactose related products, and so they are medically classified as Lactose Intolerants. The purpose of this experiment is to examine and illustrate the way that lactose gets affected by lactase enzyme whenever lactase is presented and also situated within different types of environments. We will be able to observe how the presence of lactase is necessary when it comes to lactose transformation into a consumable substance for the human system. We will be …show more content…
The three different levels of temperature that we will test are: 4*C, 25*C, and 85*C. To determine if lactase reacted on the different levels of temperature we will use glucose test strips.

Our results on Table 2 reflect that for the test tube that was placed at a temperature of 85*C had a negative result, meaning that no glucose was found. The test tube that was placed under the 25*C level of temperature contained the most glucose concentration (250 mg) according to our data on Table 2. Lastly, the tube under 4*C had a scarce amount of glucose (100 mg).

Lactase enzyme reaction when exposed to different pH levels
The purpose of this experiment is to analyze how different pH levels affect lactase activity. The three different pH levels that we will test are: pH 4, pH 6, and pH 10. To determine if lactase was able to function and produce glucose, we will use glucose test strips.

    Enzymes are biological catalysts. They work by lowering the activation energy needed to initiate a chemical reaction. Enzymes work within an optimal temperature and optimal pH. Enzymes are highly specific for a single substrate. The Enzyme is usually much larger in size than the substrate it binds to. In some cases, an enzyme requires something called a cofactor to begin the chemical reaction. There were four different experiments that were executed in the enzyme lab. Experiment 7.1, the first experiment, was performed to test the effect of temperature on enzymatic activity. Based on what I know about the effect of temperature on the enzymatic activity of lactase, if the lactase used in today’s lab was extracted from human cells, I hypothesize that the optimal temperature for lactase to be in is around 37 degrees Celsius, which is the average human body temperature. The second experiment performed, experiment 7.2, tested the effect of pH on enzymatic activity. Based on what I know about the effect of pH on the enzymatic activity of lactase, if the lactase used in today’s lab was extracted from human cells, I hypothesize that the optimal pH level is 7, which is the average pH level in humans. Experiment 7.3 tests enzymatic specificity. Knowing that lactase is specific for the substrate lactose, lactase will only bind to lactose and not work with the other substrate used in this experiment, maltose. The last experiment of the lab, 7.4, was done to determine the cofactors of the enzyme, lactase. I hypothesize that EDTA, a cofactor inhibitor, will have a negative effect on the reaction and lower the amount of glucose that could possibly be produced if EDTA was not present.…

    How is the human body able to digest the food that you eat? How quickly your body digests your food? This is because the human body contains enzymes that are the biological substance, a.k.a proteins, that act as catalysts and help complex reactions occur. There are many different enzymes that each have different specific functions. The enzymes include: diastase, pepsin, lipase, catalyse and urease. Lipase is an enzyme found in the digestive tract that catalyses the break down of fats into individual fatty acids that can be absorbed into the bloodstream. This enzyme will be used in this EEI. The purpose of this EEI is to test the rate in which lipase reacts to different variables such as temperature and pH. Enzymes are found in foods, epically raw foods such as meat, but cooking foods destroys any enzyme activity, including lipases. If the temperature changes then the pH levels will change. The optimum temperature is 37°, that is the average temperature inside the human body; the optimum pH level is 8.0. (Corporation, 2013) The purpose of this EEI and experiment is to calculate the rate in which the pH level of milk changes after it has been heated and the heated lipase is added. Four different temperature will be tested to create the most accrete results possible. When lipase is heated, it becomes a fatty acid that destroys itself, so when the lipase is heated and then added to the heated milk, it rate in which the pH level changes should be high and fast. If the lipase and milk is heated above its optimum temperature (42°) then combined, the pH level will change much quicker and the change in pH levels will be much more clear.…
