Leadership
Leadership has been an integral virtue of an individual to be successful and effective in business, politics, sports or the military. It is stated by Howard (2005) that leadership can be regarded as an ability of an individual to influence a group of people to respond to organisational goals and as a means to enhance others’ performance by forming operative groups, motivating and giving a right direction to them. It means that, as far as a business is concerned, achieving an organisational objective can only be feasible when the organisation is operated in the way that every single individual has the same sense of purpose and seeks the same goal through an appropriate leadership. This essay discusses the essence of leadership and analyses various leadership styles, in particular, the leadership style that enabled Abraham Lincoln to become such an effective leader in accordance with the framework offered by Darling and Leffel (2010).
As mentioned above, leadership is based on a process where an individual has an impact on others to get them involved in a particular activity to direct them toward a desirable goal. According to Politis (2003), there exist various leadership styles, including transformational and transactional leadership. Firstly, transformational leadership is a style that focuses on motivating a group of people to improve their confidence and capability of dealing with tasks, while transactional leadership tends to concentrate more on making followers aware of what they have to do in order to achieve the desirable outcome and providing followers with an appropriate reward in regard to their level of performance. In addition to the various leadership styles, to gain a better understanding of leadership, it is necessary to distinguish the similarities and differences between management and leadership. Darling and Leffel (2010) explain that there is no question that both leadership and management are equally crucial, regardless of the type of

Everyone has probably played the game "Follow the Leader" back in elementary school. It is a game where the leader stands in front of the line. He or she can say or do anything, and her followers (standing in a straight line behind her) must repeat exactly the same thing he or she does or says. Whoever was picked to be the leader must have loved the experience because one had the freedom to do whatever they please, while others followed miserably or happily depending on what the leader is saying or doing. However, if one was the follower, one would wait anxiously to be the next chosen leader. At the same time, one must somehow express his or her self in a fashion that will make them stand out from the rest of the students. Whether he or she is perfectly imitating the leader or behaving really respectfully of others. Nonetheless, who determines who should be the leader? What kind of characteristics must a leader possessed? What makes a great leader (Robbins, 2005)? Is there only one kind leadership? These questions will be answered as you continue to read on. In addition, you will come across case studies, real life experiences, and my own observation on how leaders in my work setting exhibit leadership behavior and how followers respond to it.…

The terms “leader” and “manager” are sometimes used interchangeably. Those of us who have worked for, or with, someone who is one and not the other will see the error in viewing those terms as synonymous. An individual can be a great leader but not a manager. Conversely, a typical nurse can be a manager but not possess many nursing leadership skills. According to Huber (2010) leadership is defined as “the process of influencing people to accomplish goals” (p. 6). Key concepts related to leadership according to Huber (2010) are influence, communication, group process, goal attainment and motivation. At is core, leadership is influencing people. In contrast, management involves influencing employees to meet an organizational goals and objectives. Huber (2010) defines management as “the coordination and integration of resources through planning, organizing, coordinating, directing, and controlling to accomplish specific on institutional goals and objectives (p.5). Managers plan, organize and control, while leaders communicate vision, motivate, inspire and empower in order to create organizational change.…

One of the most often overlooked aspects of leadership is the need for pursuit. Great leaders are never satisfied with traditional practice, static thinking, conventional wisdom, or common performance. In fact, the best leaders are simply uncomfortable with anything that embraces the status quo. Leadership is pursuit – pursuit of excellence, of elegance, of truth, of what’s next, of what if, of change, of value, of results, of relationships, of service, of knowledge, and of something bigger than themselves. In the text that follows I’ll examine the value of being a pursuer……

Introduction: Jesus Christ, Martin Luther King Jr., and Margaret Thatcher are among those who have received the distinction of a "great leader" and having "leadership abilities". Yet none of them has been referred to as a "manager" or being in "the order of management". In the words of Warren B. Bennis, this is because "Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality", which these visionaries accomplished. In this respect, the concept of leadership and management are not synonymous, especially in regards to business. This paper will attempt to define the fine line between leadership and management in business. It will explore three types of leadership styles as discussed in the "Leadership Journey" by Schaeffer 2002, highlight the attributes of a good leader and identify the communication skills required to succeed as a leader.…
