Long Term Effects Of Concussions Essay
A concussion is a injury that should be taken seriously due to the parts of the body it effects. The definition of a concussion is that "it's a trauma induced alteration in mental statues that may or may not result in loss of consciousness." (Article 2) Concussions for a student athlete vary in healing time, however, I believe that the brain should be fully healed before resuming all athletic activities. The reasoning behind this perspective is due to the possibility of future damages to the athlete and more concussions following.

Concussions are prone to high school student athletes that run off adrenaline and are extremely active. Centers for Disease control, in Article 1, estimated over 300,000 sport related concussions each year. The severity of each head trauma may vary, however, not taking it seriously can further damage the brain of the athlete. "Proper management is essential to the immediate safety and long-term future of the injured person." (Article 3) When one

Long-term concussive effects (long-term memory loss, emotional distress, depression, slowing of some types of movements, and increased possibility of suicide) may last a few months to many years." (Article 3) Concussions usually take longer than 7 days for 10% of athletes, researchers state. Not only are high school athletes prone to concussions, females receive them easier than males as well. "Data states that girls suffer more from concussions than men in similar sports." (Article 4) With all possible future damage physically and cognitive, it is safer and should be ideal for a student athlete to sit out of their sport until recovered

A concussion is a serious neurological injury cause by a blunt force to the head. A concussion can cause memory loss, loss of coordination, and can lead to CTE, or chronic traumatic encephalopathy which causes several painful, and debilitating side effects, and will ultimately lead to and early death, when left untreated by a professional doctor. There is no certain recovery length, but it requires lots of rest, and restrictions on activity, there may also be a need to immobilize the head to prevent more trauma to the brain. As concussion are so common in almost all sports, most people don’t give them a second thought to intense recovery, but that could be a fatal mistake. Without proper recovery, the soccer player could end up like Jeff Astle, a famous American player who, in 2002, who died suddenly at the age of 59. Astle was diagnosed posthumously with CTE, which most likely caused his untimely death.…

With all the excitement sports in our country and even around the world bring, some horrific injuries occur due to the competiveness of each participant. The human body can only take so much, and seems like a big target when competition is involved between two or more teams. An injury that has evolved the most out of all the injuries that can occur to someone is the concussion. According to the National Athletic Trainers' Association and the National Collegiate Athletic Association, concussions in athletes is becoming the most common injury found compared to some other sports related injury. In the past, if you got hit in the head really hard you went out till your headache went away then you went back in the game. Nobody back then realized how much damage that hard hit to the head really did to you, or how long you should stay out for and recover. Due to advances in technology we now realize our philosophy “rub some dirt on it” or “shake it off” especially when it comes to head injuries is something you should never do.…

This will help minimize the risk of concussions, and insure that the proper equipment, supervision and education is provided to the staff, students and even parents to minimize the risks associated with concussions. This should include the signs and symptoms, how concussions occur, and the long and short-term effects that may result from concussions. The protocol and policy should also include a proper way of reporting any cases of concussions by students at the slightest suspicion no matter how mild they might think it is. Moreover, the protocol should also include the right processes and procedures that should be followed in reviewing student athletes periodically as will be agreed. The main emphasis in the formulation of the protocol should be places on the need for urgent medical evaluation in the case of such injuries to prevent persistent symptoms (The State Education Department ,…

Students should be held out of sports longer after they receive a concussion. A concussion can lead to severe brain damage, however, an athlete can recover completely if they do not return to play the sport immediately. Allowing a student athlete to return to sports promptly could cause them perpetual brain damage and puts them at risk for further concussions while they are still recovering. Concussions are "invisible" injuries and high school athletes should be closely monitored until they recover completely and then, and only then, the athlete should be allowed to return to their sport.…

First of all, concussions can increase the risk for Alzheimer’s and other memory degenerative diseases. Several studies have found a relationship between head trauma and Alzheimer’s later in life. In the studies, people with a history of mild brain injuries had a higher than expected amount of Alzheimer’s pathology in the brain. Therefore those people were more likely to get Alzheimer’s. Additionally, a person with a concussion could suffer from second impact syndrome. In second impact syndrome a person who is recovering from an initial concussion sustains a subsequent concussive injury, resulting in diffuse brain swelling and a severe, permanent decrease in brain function or death. This is likely to happen to athletes because there is repetitive head trauma from participation in contact sports. Head injury can also cause an intracranial hemorrhage, or bleeding in the brain. Bleeding in the brain can lead to a build-up in pressure in the brain. This can cause the brain to shift. The patient may develop weakness on one side of the body, seizure activity and may go into a coma. Intracranial hemorrhages usually require surgery immediately. Concussions and other related traumatic brain injuries can lead to numerous syndromes and…

A concussion is a brain injury and all brain injuries are serious. They are caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head, or by a blow to another part of the body with the force transmitted to the head. They can range from mild to severe and can disrupt the way the brain normally works. Even though most concussions are mild, all concussions are potentially serious and may result in complications including prolonged brain damage and death if not recognized and managed properly. In other words, even a “ding” or a bump on the head can be serious. You can’t see a concussion and most sports concussions occur without loss of consciousness. Signs and symptoms of concussion may show up right after the injury or can take hours or days to fully appear. If your child reports any symptoms of concussion, or if you notice the symptoms or signs of concussion yourself, seek medical attention right away.…
