Application: Knowing When to Make a Referral There are various factors that affect how a child responds to traumatic events. These factors can be categorized as child factors, environmental factors, and family factors. It is important that a child development professional considers them before referring a child and his or her family to infant mental health services.
Child factors It is important that a child development professional providing learning, physical, social, and mental development services to a child and his or her family should refer the child and the family to infant mental health service if the child, family, or both exhibit emotional, social, and behavioral problems, such as persistent aggression, look depressed, and there are self-regulated problems as a result of disturbed caregiving relationship evidenced by difficulties in sleeping, self harm, or prolonged tantrums by children.
