Junior’s Journey: An Exploration of Marxism On and Off the Reservation
By Tony Ventola

Introduction
Sherman Alexie is Native American poet, novelist and filmmaker. He was born in 1966 on the Spokane Indian Reservation in Wellpinit, Washington. Much of Alexie’s body of work revolves around themes of American/Indian relations, alcoholism, poor living conditions, violence and many other challenges that come from living life on an Indian Reservation. Alexie does an excellent job of balancing out these serious subjects with a sense of humor and satire, which helps underscore a message of hope even in the darkest of times.
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian focuses heavily on this idea of “hope.” The main character, Junior, is presented with the classic hero’s journey to find hope in a desolate world. Yet Junior will not go on to face intergalactic battle stations, wicked witches or super powered villains. Instead, Junior will have to do battle against centuries old cultural and societal struggles, poverty, and racism. Junior sets out to find hope amongst these challenges, and as his teacher, Mr. P tells him “You’re going to find more and more hope the farther and farther you walk away from this sad, sad, sad reservation.” (Alexie 43)
Having grown up on the Spokane reservation, then living a life as a successful writer, Alexie has to benefit of being able to analyze the culture of the American Indian versus the culture of “the white man” and see the vast differences in them, as well as their similarities. For this reason, among others, it is important to look at Alexie’s work with the cultural eye of the Marxist literary theory. Karl Marx sought to call out, define and ultimately fix the vast divides between social classes. While Marx was dealing with the bourgeoisie in Europe, Junior has to deal with the “hicks and rednecks” of Reardan High School.

“Roma and Julie: Indians in Duality” by Barney Bush and “Looking for Hiawatha” by Andrew Connors are two short stories selected from “Blue Dawn, Red Earth,” a collection of contemporary Native Indians literatures (Trafzer). Bush is a Shawnee who grew up in Karber’s Ridge in Hardin County, Illinois (Bush). Connors is a Bad River Ojibwe from Wisconsin (Trafzer). In both of these stories, the theme of Western cultural colonization in Native American culture is very conspicuous. Bush and Connors are likely referring to the titles of the stories, “Roma and Julie: Indians in Duality” to “Romeo and Juliet,” and “Looking for Hiawatha” to “Song of Hiawatha”. The former is an English classic Western written by William Shakespeare. The latter is written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, a famous white American poet (Maine Historical Society). The authors deliberately chose the titles to represent the cultural oppression from the Western colonialists. In addition, readers may experience the idea about the cultural conflict between Native Americans and the white people throughout the stories. In order to illustrate the oppression of Western culture in the stories, the article would compare and contrast the cultural conflicts from a Marxist’s conflict perspective. In addition, the paper would analyze the literature elements such as the characterization and style of the stories and how they related to the main idea of the stories.…

Through his omniscient point of view, Sherman Alexie approaches his audience embracing three important topics in his short story. First, the author illustrates through his narrative the socio-economic conditions that in the present time continue to affect thousands of Native Americans through-out Indian American reservations in the United States. Second, he allows his audience to relate Victor’s personage with himself by describing places, experiences and characters that were part of his real life in his younger years as a teenager. Finally by using victor’s negative behavior, the author highlights and…

‘A specter is haunting the economy of the world-the specter of multinational conglomerates. All the powers of America have entered into a holy alliance to exercise this specter: the President, the Fed, Wall Street, CEO’s, lobbyists, government, and government regulators.’ This specter is something new that was not seen in days of mine. I did however, prophesize that events such as these could happen in the future. There is no company that earns as much revenue in the world. By giving some financial statements a mere cursory glance, Walmart is by far the largest company in the world. Is there another store that allows a customer to buy nearly everything they need or want, and have these items under one roof… for, on average, the lowest price possible? Food stuff, car audio systems, gift cards, electronics, welding caps, and furniture all sold at cut-rate prices. Today I am here to talk about how capitalist companies such as Walmart does this and the secret of their economic success. The key ingredients to this success include taking advantage of a workforce who is desperate to work due to an unhealthy division of labor caused by job specialization. Another ingredient added is the exploitation of these workers. Lastly, there needs to be some insight on how Walmart is able to keep such a wide variety of goods in one store and overload the senses of the customers and how customers see these items.…

Junior exhibited a different form of wealth when Reardan became an environment that began to lack the constant discrimination and prejudice he felt when he first started attending school there. This moment of self-awareness allowed him to see the inequality at the Reardan v. Wellpinit basketball game rematch after he won. Junior describes “I mean, jeez, all of the seniors on our team were going to college” and “I knew that none of them was going to college. Not one of them” (195). The image Junior narrates for the reader, depicts the systemic problem of poverty is a result of inequality. For a second, Junior was comfortable enough that he almost forgot the oppression but reality soon sets. In order for Junior to attain hope, he had to assimialte to the culture that benefitted off of the reservation’s…

Let’s start with the humor he uses in making the mishaps in his life seem less dreadful. When Junior is in math class he says, “Yep, I have to admit that isosceles triangles make me feel hormonal” (25). When the reader reads this, their reaction is to laugh. In reality, the author is trying to communicate that they live in such poverty and have such lack of education, so they are very eager to learn. Another example of Alexie using humor is when the white dentist downgrades the Indians at a level that is “less human” believing they do not feel the same pain as his white patients (2). When Alexie describes this part, his intention is to make the reader chuckle a bit. He achieves this, but at the same time he is proving the racism there is towards Indians in a less intense way. When Junior asks his dad about thanksgiving and what they should be thankful for, his dad tells him the should be thankful that they didn’t all get killed (102). It is funny, but points out the way Indians feel about their past.…

In Sherman Alexie’s short story “The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven”, the Native American narrator struggles to find a place where he belongs in modern white-dominated America. The story structure itself reflects the restless nature of the narrator, moving from place to place and from time to time, and allows the reader to begin to hone in on the issues that native people face in a contemporary ever-changing world. The narrator’s inner conflict manifests itself in polarizing moments of Indian against white, in both real-life situations and subconsciously through dreams. This inner conflict can be interpreted as a reflection of not just the narrator, but of Native Americans across the country. Despite hundreds of years separating…

Junior was worried about what other members of the reservation would say about him leaving to go to another school. “You’ll be the first one to ever leave the reservation this way,” Junior’s Mom said. “The Indians around here are going to be very angry with you.” The Indian reservation treated Junior badly for leaving the school; I would be the first child to move back in with my dad. When I made my decision, I was scared of what people would say about me being twenty and moving back home but when the offer came to me, I had no choice but to accept and move home.…

“One of Bird's most serious charges against Alexie is that in Reservation Blues he ‘'prey[s]' upon’ his community and culture in perpetuating damaging stereotypes, including that of the drunken Indian. As she puts it, ‘Stereotyping native people does not supply a native readership with soluble ways of undermining stereotypes, but becomes a part of the problem, and returns an image of a generic 'Indian' back to the original producers of that image’ (49)” (Evans).…
