Military and Respect
What is respect? Respect can be in various forms. It can be knowledge, self awareness, trust, character, honesty, understanding, and a positive attitude. But respect also has to be earned. If you cant respect yourself then you wont be able to respect others. To gain respect you have to treat others the way you would want to be treated. Without respect you cant have team work and care for other peoples well being.

To be respected as a leader you also have to respect your followers. You also have to motivate and encourage them. Show them that as a leader that you care for them as a person. Everyone shows respect in different ways. The many ways that are the same are to help them learn, help them get through expected and unexpected life challenges, and to provide guidance.

Respect can be shown in many ways. The most common way is to be a listener. Not just any listener but an active listener. To be an active listener you have to hear what someone is trying to say. Without listening you don’t have understanding. To understand you have to listen without interrupting. You can ask questions later. You also have to have the whole picture and not just one person’s side of the story.

Another way to show respect is to trust the people you work with. If you don’t trust the people you work with it makes everyday task harder then they should be for instance if your boss tells you do go pick something up from another office and/or shop you have to trust that he or she will get the right stuff from that office and / or shop. You also have to trust their judgment and their knowledge of the matter at hand.

Another way to be respectful is to have a positive outlook on everything you will deal with in your life or anybody that trust you enough to let you know what they are dealing with. Even if you know it is something that is a really horrible thing to have happen to you or to somebody that you know, but you shouldn’t give a disrespectful

Starting with respect which is defined as a feeling of admiration for something or someone because of their or its qualities or achievements. From this definition I feel the key word is admiration, and it’s hard to admire something or someone without good qualities. Respect comes from people of all walks of life and in all kind of situations. For example while serving in the Air Force I noticed that a lot of military members seemed to have respect for a lot superior’s rank, but not the person. I began to notice this trend as a young airman when an older senior NCO pulled me aside and said to me “Hey Sparks, would you rather have respect for your rank or personality?” This was a question I pondered on for a bit and replied with the answer, “Both”. The reason I said both was because no matter what my rank was I wanted people to always respect me as a human being. After my reply the Senior NCO, next asked “Well Sparks how do you achieve both?” After giving this next question a few minutes of thought I stated to the Senior Master Sergeant “Take care of people.” This conversation always resonated with me in my military career and in later in life because it showed an…

Respect, especially in the Army is a very important value to live by. It is much more than just talking kindly and listening to someone. It is the process of taking into consideration someone’s emotions, feelings and needs. You must also focus on their ideas, thoughts, and preferences. It is showing someone that you value their time; that you care what they have to say. Showing someone respect allows that person to know and acknowledge that you are tracking them and that you comprehend and believe in what they are saying, It is important to allow someone to feel your respect for them. It will ease the conversation and create trust. Behavior and attitude will allow the person demanding respect to feel that respect. When we respect each other, there are fewer conflicts. People get along easier and avoid the un-necessary drama associated with a lack of respect. For those of us in the military, this is very important.…

Coming from a customer service background I constantly dealt with rude and disrespectful people. Respect is an attitude and if you don’t respect your peers, your coworkers, and authority it would be impossible to succeed in life. Also it is difficult to respect others if we don’t respect ourselves. Respect, has taught me that one of the best way to show it is for me to actually listen to people’s point of view regardless of whether I agree with them or not. Also calling disrespectful actions out in a calm manner, because logical way allows people to notice their unacceptable…

Reflecting on respect the first thing that comes to mind is treating others the way you want to be treated. I believe people deserve only as much respect as they give, although there are many very disrespectful people, on the other side there are also many very respectful people. The definition of respect is a feeling of admiration for someone because of their qualities or achievements. This definition was taken from a dictionary. I do not agree with this definition because we should respect people regardless of their qualities or achievements, people seem to only respect those who are of a higher class than them, but disrespect those who are a class lesser than themselves. We do not have to admire people or what they do, just respect them. People might think more highly of a president than an inventor or scientist, but at the same time not think anything of the next door neighbor. If we were to respect everyone regardless of them being in a high or low position then the imbalance would be fixed. There wouldn’t be so much disrespect in the world, something that needs to be cleared up is the difference between fear and respect and also their correlation; many people respect others out of fear of them, they might be afraid to stand up for what’s right because of possible consequences or they may feel threatened or something around them threatened. For example, an employee an employee might find a boss is cheating him out of his money, instead of standing up and saying something about he could be afraid of getting fired and therefore won’t do anything, but he could be courageous and say something. There are even more extreme scenarios. I believe respect is connected to each individual sense of self quality. Responsibility, discipline, integrity, imagination…etc, I believe respect is part of suing each of those.…

Respect means a lot of different things for different people. It includes taking someone’s feelings, needs, thoughts, wishes and preferences into consideration. It also means taking all of these seriously and give them worth and value. In fact, giving someone repect seems similar to valuing them and their thoughts, and feelings. It also seems to include acknowledging them, listening to them, being truthful with them, and accepting the individual beliefs. Respect is to be shown through behavior and it can also be felt. We can act in ways which are considered respectful, yet we can also feel respected by someone. Because it is possible to act in way that do not reflect how we really feel, the feeling of respect is much more important than the behavior without the feeling.when the feeling is there the feeling will naturally follow. When we are respected we gain the voluntary cooperation of people. We don’t have to use as much as our energy and resouces trying to get our needs met. When people respect one another there are fewer conflicts. In summary, it is for both evolutionary and practical reasons that respect is important and also why we simply feel better when we are respected. Respect seems to be like a boomerang in the sense that you must send it out before it will come back to you. Respect can not be demanded or forced, though sometimes people mistakenly believe that it can be commanded. If respecting someone means respecting their feelings and there needs, then if a person does not respect your feelings and your need then they don’t respect you at all. If those in positions of power and authority do not respect your needs and feelings, they will not earn your respect. Defining respect in three seprate dictionaries, respect is defined as a regard for or appreciation of the worth or value of someone or something. How would the world differ without respect? Respect is the act of showing someone that you value his or her feelings. Respect is a universal value…
