MIRACLE WORKER THE MOVIE: A REACTION PAPER

From a perspective of a soon to be teacher such as yours truly, I can say that the movie entitled “Miracle Worker” serves as a memento that there are things we believed to be impossible, but became possible because we exerted sufficient perseverance into it. I salute the passion and commitment of Annie Sullivan to tutor a deaf, mute and blind child in the person of Helen Keller. Annie Sullivan is just one out of many teachers out there who have given their life to become catalyst for well –rounded development of the differently able children. In relation to the subject EDUC. 1 Child and Adolescent Development, I can say that the movie is quite appropriate to be viewed by students who were enrolled in Teachers Certificate Curriculum for Non Education Professionals (TCCNEP) because the movie provided us the unique and effective teaching strategies that are well designed to provide special education to those children with multiple sensory impairments. As soon to be teacher, I should be equipped with competence and be prepared for possibilities that I soon to be encountered as I practice my teaching profession later.

I can still remember that during those moments before I viewed the movie, I really asked myself if it is still possible for a person to learn if he/she has multiple sensory impairments such as the defects of the sight, hearing and speaking. Hence, after I viewed the movie, I definitely realized that even if the senses were impaired and not the mind, there would still be a possibility to learn the same way like those with normal sensory functioning if there is a collaborative support from the community, home and school which nowadays proposed by DepEd through the School Improvement Plan (SIP). I realized through the movie, that children with multiple sensory impairments just ultimately need to have a language in a most unique way in order to learn since according to Annie Sullivan, “language is more

    I have conducted my field of experience at Westside Elementary School, second and third grade classroom. The third grade class consists of 20 students. The teacher does not have any aide even though she needs some assistance, because two of her students are falling behind. The sad part about this is that the students have not being diagnosed yet, but they are having a lot of difficulties. The teacher mentioned that by fourth or fifth grade those two students will need to be placed in a special education classroom.     I choose some take away messages from different sections throughout the film. I will use the information from the video and apply it to my everyday tasks in my future classroom. Starting from the beginning of the film with the “Difficult Times to Processing” section it allows me to understand students with learning disabilities have twice as much to process, question and answer so they need more time. The “Risk Taking” section taught me how students with learning disabilities like reassurance and do not like surprises. If I have a student with a learning disability, I would make sure they knew ahead of time a very important test or quiz and what information they would need to study and help them prepare. The “Behavior” hit me hard for I remember as a child one of my classmates had a learning disorder and would be sent to detention but could not understand why the teacher disliked her when all she kept doing was asking questions. During the film I really enjoyed the “Visual Motor Coordination”, the Mirror trick was entertaining and helpful. I would expect the elementary education students to pay close attention to how hard writing might actually be for students with learning disabilities. “Oral Expression” explained how hard it really is for students with learning disabilities to even speak at times. When I get nervous I begin to stutter which makes me more nervous, I cannot even imagine what an LD child endures all day long, and it would be exhausting. The last section regarding “Fairness”, reminded me how every teacher should be reminded of how in order to be fair you must treat everyone differently and according to their needs.…

    Another aspect of deaf culture that the video opened my eyes to was how much prejudice the deaf community and people with disabilities have gone through. Before watching, I understood that being deaf was hard, but I had just assumed that there had always been laws protecting the rights of deaf people. Watching the film reminded me that people with disabilities have faced a lot of discrimination in the past and still do today. The video also reminded me how challenging a simple task like calling a friend can be for a deaf person, and it made me think how hard a deaf person's life can be if people don’t make think about them.     I think this book gives us the opportunity to reflect on our roles in our students’ lives, as a general classroom teacher and how we can best help our students develop into active learners and well-adjusted adults. Paley also made us think about how children’s story and classroom community play a significant role in helping children learn about themselves and confront and solve the problems of daily life. As teachers, we often do not recognize the unlimited inner ability every child possesses. I also think that as an educator, it is easy to fall into the trap of having lower expectations for students with special needs like Jason. It’s very easy to view these students as “defective or different”, who will need a lot of help adjusting to the school environment. However, Palely, as her interactions with Jason show, truly believes that each student, whether progressing as expected or having difficulties, possesses the capability to succeed in the classroom under the guidance of a dedicated teacher. One of the strategies she utilizes to accomplish this goal is to help the child create and take an active in telling their own story, allowing them to express their own unique world view. She encourages her students to feel pride in their stories and in this way helps build their self-esteem. Paley is also flexible, allowing the student to choose for themselves whether to act out the story, write it down, or dictate it to someone else. In this way, she can address the unique needs and capabilities of each student. (Personally, I would like to plan to make the same accommodations in my classroom…

    One passion we as educators all share is the love for our students. Those of us who chose the path of working with special education students especially know that genuine place we have in our hearts for teaching students disabilities with learning disabilities. Over the last few decades, more awareness about these disabilities has florist throughout our nation. Many advocates of their time have fought to educate these students in order to help them overcome their struggle. Over time we see the long protect the rights of the students and provide them with the restrictive environment settings in order to provide an equal but adequate education. Despite the fact services are an essential part of protecting a student with special needs rights; it cannot be at the cost of their education either. If the student is able to complete the work at the same annual yearly progress as the general education population, proper services whether it be assistive technology or a personal aide, must be provided to the student. The services not only help students’ with special needs successfully graduate school but it provides them a promising future. Graduating with the tools and knowledge needed to survive on their own, students are now becoming functioning members of our society. As the candidate for my interview, I chose Dr.Gerard Crisinino, special education director of Jersey City Pubic School. He has instilled within him that compassion for working with these children and dedicated the last 30 years of his life to providing services for those students in need.     As a result of my coursework through the Alternate Teacher Certification Program and my current position as an instructional aide at a rural middle school in Texas, I became concerned that strategies utilized with achieving the goals of the Individualized Education Plan for certain special education students were leading to instances of learned helplessness.     There is always more than meets the eye when spotlighting different realms. I wanted this paper to meet more than just the standards set by my professor. I wanted to be able to lean towards or away from a career choice.
