Assignment

Task 1

1a Using well labelled diagrams create 2, 2 fold leaflets outlining the stages of Mitosis and Meiosis. You need to create one leaflet for each (P2).

1b Using well labelled diagrams explain how the behaviour of chromosomes during meiosis leads to variation. In this report you must explain crossing over and independent assortment (P4). (Max 500 words)

1c Create a table comparing mitosis and meiosis (P2).

Task 2

2 Carry out practical investigations to record stages of cell division in garlic / onion root tip cells (P3). Using photographs of your results identify at least 5 cells that are dividing and explain the stage these cell are in and the behaviour of the chromosomes.(P2 & M2)

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

WHEN ANSWERING ALL QUESTIONS YOU SHOULD REFER AND CONSIDER THE GRADING CRITERIA:

P2 Identify the stages of mitosis and meiosis in eukaryotic cells [IE1; CT2]

Mitosis is easily observed in cells that are growing at a rapid pace such as whitefish blastula or onion root tips, which was used in this lab experiment. The root tips contain and area called the apical meristem that has the highest percentage of cells undergoing mitosis. The whitefish blastula is formed directly after the egg is fertilized. This is a period of rapid growth and numerous cellular divisions where mitosis can be observed. In mitosis the cell is in interphase, and have a distinct nucleus and nucleoli where the thin threads of chromatin thicken into distinct chromosomes and the nuclear evvelope breaks open releasing them into the cytoplasm. The firs signs of the spindle begin to appear, next the cell begins metaphase, where the spindle attaches to the Centromere of each chromosome and moves them to the same level in the middle of the cell. This level position is called the metaphase plate. Anaphase begins when the chromatids are separated and pulled to opposite poles, then the final stage is telophase. The nuclear envelope is reformed and the chromosomes gradually uncoil. Cytokinesis may occur, in which, a cleavage furrow will form and the two daughter cells will separate. Meiosis is more complex and involves two nuclear divisions. The…

The chromosomes replicate and each DNA strand unzips into two strands, while free floating bases attach to the strands. Chromosomes begin to condense and attach to the membrane of the nucleus pairing up with their corresponding chromosome. Enzymes cut the DNA from the chromosomes at this time. The spindle fibers from and centrioles begin to separate to opposite ends. The chromosomes will now line up on either side of the metaphase plate. The chromosomes split to other ends of the cell. New nuclear membranes form at other ends of the cell. The rest of the cell divides and the division of the cell's cytoplasm has occurred. The chromosomes condense again, spindles and centrioles form, and membrane fragments disperse. Spindle fibers attach to the chromosomes. Centrioles are at opposite ends. Fibers are pulled to opposite ends of the cell. Chromatids arrive at opposite ends and new nuclear membranes form. The rest of the cell continues to divide and there are now four daughter cells. Following these steps of meiosis will help us be able to have a better understanding and awareness of who the parents are of Mrs.…

In this experiment first the stages of an onion cell undergoing mitosis are going to be observed and every stage is going to be detected and drawn on paper. A brief description to what is going on should be attached to the pictures. This is important to understand the basics of cell division which is necessary growth, repair and asexual reproduction. Second the number of cells undergoing each phase is going to be counted to figure out in which phase the cell remains the most. If interphase is the stage in which the cell grows and prepares for cell division then the number of cells undergoing interphase will be the most. After cells were counted it came out that indeed the number of cells in interphase is the most followed by prophase, metaphase=anaphase and telophase. This makes us come to the conclusion that the longest phase for a cell is interphase in which the cell grows and gets ready to divide. The second longest in prophase in which the chromatin fibers start to form chromosomes. The other phases which follow are very short and quick.…

This experiment aims to observe mitosis and meiosis on cell specimens. It involves the modelling of the stages of meiosis and also the staining procedures to identify mitosis in onion root tip. There are two parts to the procedure of the experiment whereby the first is staining and observing mitosis in onion root tips and the second being observing and comparing mitosis between whitefish blastula and onion root tip. The results are that the five stages of mitosis have been observed and sketched, together with a comparison of telophase in plant and animal cells. The difference between the two types of cell division mitosis and meiosis has also been recorded. The conclusion is that all the objectives of the experiment have been met and it is recommended that the mitotic spindle be stained for a more complete picture of the various stages of mitosis.…
