Observations

An observation can result in a very important learning lesson. The act of observing starts at a very young age and never stops. Maturation evolves from self-motivation and efforts to adapt to day-to-day experiences. Observation is how a toddler learns new things. They observe their mother and father doing “grown up” things and try to re-enact them. By doing this they learn new words, build their own personalities, as well as many other important traits. As people grow older the observation turns toward peers, teachers, and other people associated in their lives. It was my job to observe and learn from a fifth grade inner city class. Growing up, I went to a Jewish day school. It was very strict and nothing like a regular elementary school. The curriculum was much stronger and better than that of a regular school system. My high school was the same deal. It was a magnet school and once again the education I received was much better than a regular public high school. The only reason I am referring to this is because I was beyond shocked when I walked into Martin Luther King Elementary. My observations started when I stepped off the University of Hartford bus. The school was bigger than I had thought and very old. When I walked in everyone was polite and directed me to the correct room. When I entered the room, it was very chaotic. A couple kids were sitting down, but the majority of the class was shuffling in and out of the classroom. There were seventeen fifth graders, one main teacher, and a teacher’s aid. The classroom itself was very colorful and full of learning techniques, classroom rules, and the student’s work. There were posters explaining common grammar mistakes and another for simple spelling errors. The desks were set up in groups of four and referred to as teams. The time that I had arrived which was after recess was what I believed routine. Two students, one boy, one girl would be sent to use the

I observed Mrs. Ball’s 7th grade science class at Helen Tyson Middle School on Thursday November 5, 2015. The classroom had a great climate and was decorated with interesting scientific educational material. She had the desks set up in organized rows with two kids per table. This set up allowed for less interaction between the kids because they were so spaced out, which seemed to keep them on task. The dynamics in the classroom were great. She connected well with each student and was interested in what they had to say. She was very in control of the class and the students seemed to respond well to her. The students interacted pleasantly with one another and were were all very welcoming. They came into class, sat down, and got right to work.…

“Observation,” by Henry David Thoreau, is a passage that presents the idea that there is no such thing as pure objective observation, only subjective observation. Written during the Age of Enlightment, philosophes Thoreau stated that observations do not need to be true and accomplish an overall purpose because observations come from the individual and what he or she believes in. Thoreau was able to illustrate this idea in this text through examples like “though all his neighbors pronounce it a Sahara, it will be a paradise to him; for the desert which we see is the result of the barrenness of our experience.” Specifically relating to this example, it demonstrates that observations become significant and interesting if the individual believes it is so. If he or she does not believe it is credible, the observation becomes useless. From this, Thoreau explains that observations tend to be almost inhuman and brick-like. In the current times of the early 1800s, the only observations made were about science and new ideas that were not important to others. This makes the ideas not realistic. Another reason why Thoreau wrote this passage was to prove that observations are made through human experiences. He states that in order to fully understand the thing, idea, place, or person, is experience through the very eyes of that person. Overall, true observations come from each individual and there is no such thing as a true observation.…

“What are observations? An observation is a piece of work in which the child’s words and actions are recorded in great detail. This child’s actions are then analyzed by the practitioner. It is about looking and listening to children. A bit like being a scientist we collect information or data process it and draw up conclusions from it.”…

11 students showed up around 9:55 along with the teacher. One of the students gave remorse to the teacher due to fact that he had to miss class for something and that he really liked this class. I was astonished to see that the student actually came to class and told the teacher that he would have to miss; whereas, most students would just not show up or inform the teacher. 13 students showed up around 10:00. The fronts seats are now filled up, I found that quite interesting because you think that would be the row that would fill up first. Also, I came to notice that the majority of the students were sitting right in front of the teachers desk in a 3x4 cube of students. 10:02 class started and the teacher put notes on the board and began her lecture. Out of 29 kids, only two had laptops. One of them were taking pictures of the notes while the other was typing them. Additionally, two more kids were on their cellphones not paying attention at all. Those students were setting in the back row with their hoods up and all relaxed.…

Here in his writing, Kozol shares his experiences with students and teachers while visiting Fremont High School in Los Angeles, California. From the beginning, Kozol set the mood for the piece by describing the lackluster conditions of the buildings. He described the lack of sufficient classroom space by saying that "nearly a third of all the classrooms in the school, were located in portables...took place in converted storage closets" (Kozol 641). By beginning his written tour of this school with these vivid descriptions, Kozol instantly placed me inside both the school and a depressing atmosphere.…

There were two Caucasian students, seven African-American students, and six Mexican students. Mrs. Brodie was the teacher and Ms. Johnson was the teacher assistant. The classroom was large and there was plenty of space for the children to move about. The classroom structure was very similar to that of the 3-year-old classroom that I observed in my first field observation. There was also a carpet on the floor for circle time and the classroom was divided up into centers as well. The centers were clearly labeled. Some of the centers included reading, art, science, manipulatives, and blocks. As I stated before it was very similar to the 3-year-old classroom set-up. The classroom was filled with print and there were many different aspects of cultural references which included posters in the Spanish language and books that represented the different diversity of all of the students. The classroom was like the 3-year-old classroom amplified. I am thinking that maybe because the school is state funded that it why they do have so many more materials than a regular preschool classroom. The science area even had a telescope in the center. The children knew what it was and what it was used…

At 1:00 p.m. I entered into Evoline C. West Elementary school on Thursday, July 12 2012 for an interview with Mrs. Yolanda Lawrence. As I entered the classroom, I was greeted by Mrs. Lawrence, the head teacher in this classroom. Mrs. Lawrence has no assistant at this present because of it being in the summer. After I entered into the classroom, the entire class welcomed me with “hello Ms. Flournoy”. It made my day to see all of those smiley faces greeting me. This was a 2nd grade classroom which consisted of 17 students of which 8 were girls and 9 were boys. This interview and observation was a total of 2 hours long. During the observation of Mrs. Lawrence classroom, I noticed how the students flocked under Mrs. Lawrence as she started reading one their favorite books before they did their afternoon lesson. For some reason I got an excitement about doing this interview.…

As nervous as I was when I walked into Saint Joseph Catholic School (K-8) for my first day of kindergarten, I never thought I would be able to leave after 6th grade and enter the world of middle school. In a small school of about 400 kids, I was familiar with every face that passed by me in the hallway. I got to know the kids in my grade so well and we all knew each other’s life stories. By the time I was in 6th grade at Saint Joseph, some of my friends were planning on going to Kinard middle school in 7th grade. At this point in my life, I was not completely content with where I was going to school. The realization came to me that it was time to move on. It was time for me to try something new.…

While the walls were decorated with artwork, the tone, or mood, of the school made the place seem dreary. An enormous reason for this was the principal, who would only leave her office in order to yell at students. As one can imagine, the kids were not fond of the principal. They would often mock her voice when she came on the loud speaker. Her vigilance made my classmates more willing to act out, and was counteractive. This created a harsh, or uncomfortable learning environment. Children feared the principal’s punishments, and I believe a student should never feel fear in a learning environment. Therefore, unfortunately, we did not enjoy waking up every morning to go to school. Overall, I believe this showed in the schools…

Observation learning in my opinion is one of the most dangerous learning tool in the youth. Most kids in today’s generation learn by observing the media. Media to children equals parenting and role models. They live by media, everything and anything that they do relates back to what was done on a TV show. An example of negative observation for children will be the recent exposure of Miley Cyrus’s “salvia” bust. Since there are a lot of young girls that look up to Miley they might decide let me do the same thing because she did. They don’t really know the affect it has on their bodies because they are so young but they just do it because someone they look…
