Of Mice And Men Movie And Book Comparison
Often books become so popular that they are changed into movies. The directors often take the liberties to keep them the same. In Gary Sinise’s version of John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men there are many significant changes. Although symbols are used in both versions viewers lose out on the foreshadowing of the red and the thematic aspect of solitaire. The absence of foreshadowing to the color red changes the viewers meaning behind the symbol. In the first scene of the movie a woman is running down a hillside wearing a tattered red dress in Weed. In the book the event was told by George as he said ''Well he [Lennie] seen this girl in a red dress… So he reaches out to feel this red dress an' the girl lets out a squawk''… (Steinbeck 41) From the opening scene of the movie the girl in Weed as she is known as is wearing a tattered red dress tells the viewers that something happen. The original title of Of Mice and Men called ''Something That …show more content…
In the movie George doesn’t play solitaire at all which shows he isn't lonely. From this standpoint the viewer losses out on the theme of loneliness in the book. In the book George plays solitaire because it says ''George stared at his solitaire lay and then he flounced around the cards together and turned around to Lennie ''(Steinbeck 29). This shows that George is travelling a two man Journey but only one of the men is thinking because Lennie can't do it for himself at times. Lennie not being able to think on his own makes George feel alone in everything they do. Another quote in the book that doesn't show up in the movie is '' George carefully built up his line of solitaire cards''(Steinbeck 42). On this occasion George is surrounded by people and still feels lonely because he forgets the people around him while playing. The thematic aspect of loneliness in the movie is lost is important because the movie never shows George

The title of the book that I am doing my report on is Of Mice and Men. The author of this realistic fictional novel is John Steinbeck. The Penguin Group published it. Of Mice and Men was published in 1937 and has 107 pages. This story is about two friends, one of which is mentally impaired traveling to different states trying to make a living to accomplish their dreams. I believe that the author wanted to inform us about how hard economic times were back during the Great Depression.…

They both have similar qualities that relate in each story. In Steinbeck's novel, Of Mice and Men, the time period is set in the 1930s. In the movie Whats Eating Gilbert Grape, it is set more in the modern times. The characters act and are similar in a lot of ways. Gilbert is a teenager that is struggling to support his family after his father killed himself. Gilbert relates to George because they are both constantly having to take care of someone else. George is always having to take care of Lennie. Lennie is also a mentally handicapped man who is the reason why they are in trouble most of the time. Lennie and Arnie are exactly the same. They both have a "fatherly" figure that is always there to take care of them and they both are diagnosed with mentally retardation.…

The book, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, is about two men named George and Lennie who are living in the time of the Great Depression. They travel together and after they get themselves into trouble in the city of Weed, they moved to work on a ranch. There is also a movie, “Of Mice and Men,” that is based off of the book. There are many themes in the story, one of them being power. The movie differs slightly from the book in the fact that it has fewer examples showing the importance of power, unlike the book where there are many instances of power.…

In John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men" there were many ideas, many of which were contrasting. This is shown even in the title contrasting and comparing mice and men and their similarities and their differences. This shows that in John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men" Lennie was a blessing, and a burden to George.…

In the story george always plays solitaire which is a one person game “sol” in spanish means alone and they go to soledad which means isolation. Could we assume that george was going to be alone in the end and he wouldn’t have someone to be with at the end. “George cut the cards again and put out a solitaire lay, slowly and deliberately.” This evidence connects to my theme because it shows how he is slowly going to be lonely in the end also he will have no one to be by his side and he will not get his dream where there is equality and…

John Steinbeck (born in 1902) was a talented Californian writer. Steinbeck spent much of his time in New York and the Salinas Valley. Although he spent a few years at Stanford University, he desperately wanted to be a writer, therefore he started writing. His work includes The Grapes of Wrath, Cannery Row, The Red Pony, East of Eden and of course, Of Mice and Men. Hollywood loved Steinbeck and even made these very books in to film adaptations. Steinbeck was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962 for his realistic but imaginative writings. In this essay I will be talking about one of John’s well known books, Of Mice and Men. This story is about two travelling ranch workers, George and Lennie, trying to earn enough money to get their own house and farm. The tale is based is 1930’s America during the Great Depression. This book encompasses themes of prejudice, racism and the fight for personal independence.…

Steinbeck uses the symbolism of cards to represent that no matter how hard we fight, we are destined to live the life fate plans for us. George only plays solitaire to show that he has given in to fate and will be alone with no one else alongside him. Even with other people around him, George only plays alone which represents that he will always feel alone even if he is physically not. “George stared at his solitaire lay, and then he flounced the cards together and turned around to Lennie.”(p. 29) George would play cards without Lennie who “was…just watching him.”(p.29) representing that Lennie would not be involved with George’s destiny. It also shows that although George and Lennie travel together they didn’t play cards together because no matter how many times they could have played together, they never would have won and beat fate. Naturally, George “was small and quick…with restless eyes and sharp strong features”(p.2) and when he spoke he always did it sharply. His repeated sharpness indicates a higher intelligence and it is to be expected that a more knowledgeable person would survive longer in the real world longer than an…

Hopes and dreams are important in ‘Of Mice and Men.’ Not is it important to the characters of the story itself, it is the theme of the novel. In this essay I will talk about the hopes and dreams of the main ensemble and also about the context of the novel, the American Dream and the Great Depression on the 1930’s. I will also talk about the poem Steinbeck based the book’s title off and how important it is to the book’s overall theme.…

One way steinbeck expresses loneliness through the novel is by using motif. As said many times by George “guys like [them] have no family and belong no place” (Steinbeck 54 ) this expresses how lonely he really is. George does not understand what having a friend feels like even if he has Lennie because he still feels lonely. Additionally, George also goes on talking about a future for him and Lennie. “Someday [they]…
