Organophosphorus insecticides • Organophosphorus insecticides are normally esters, amides, or thiol derivatives of phosphoric, phosphonic, phosphorothioic, or phosphonothioic acids. Most are only slightly soluble in water and have a high oil-to-water partition coefficient and low vapor pressure.

• Organophosphates
- are commonly used for small animals as flea and tick powders, sprays, foggers, shampoos and dips, flea collars, and formerly, as systemic insecticides.
• Examples: Malathion, dibrom, chlorpyrifos, temephos, diazinon and terbufos are organophosphates. Mode of Action
• Organophosphorus insecticides exert their acute effects in both insects and mammals by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in the nervous system with subsequent accumulation of toxic levels of acetylcholine
(ACh), which is a neurotransmitter. In many cases, the organophosphorylated enzyme is fairly stable, so that recovery from intoxication may be slow.

What is Acetylcholinesterase (
AChE)?

• An enzyme that breaks down the neurotransmitter acetylcholine at the synaptic clef (the space between two nerve cells) so the next nerve impulse can be transmitted across the synaptic gap.

Effects of Poisoning
• Chronic toxicity
• Repeated or prolonged exposure to organophosphates may result in the same effects as acute exposure including the delayed symptoms.
• Other effects repeatedly exposed include impaired memory and concentration, disorientation, severe depressions, irritability, confusion, headache, speech difficulties, delayed reaction times, nightmares, sleepwalking and drowsiness or insomnia.
• An influenza-like condition with headache, nausea, weakness, loss of appetite, and malaise.

• Low level exposure

    The rapid absorption of pesticides through this specific route increases the hazard of respiratory exposure. The greatest potential for poisoning via respiratory exposure is with vapors and extremely fine particles of the spray solution. Pesticide exposure is usually low when dilute sprays are applied with common conventional spraying equipment because larger droplet sizes are produced. By contrast, when low volume equipment is used to apply concentrated material, the potential for a respiratory exposure is increased because smaller droplets are being produced. Pesticide application in confined areas (e.g. greenhouses) also contributes to increased potential for exposure through inhalation. Respirators and gas masks can provide protection from respiratory exposure. Eyes are particularly sensitive to absorption, and therefore any contact of pesticides with the eye presents an immediate threat of injury, blindness, or even death. Eye protection is always a prerequisite when measuring or mixing concentrated and toxic pesticides. Proper protection of the eyes also should be used when there is a chance of exposure to the diluted spray or dusts that may drift into the eyes. Pesticides in a granular formulation may also present a hazard to the eyes due to the size and weight of the individual particles. If applied with power equipment, particles may bounce off vegetation and cause significant eye injury as well as poisoning to an applicator if struck in sensitive body areas (i.e. the eye). The property of garlic that is considered as an effective chemical that can kill insects and pests is its ALICIN, it is not seen in its natural state but when shopped and crushed, the enzyme ALLINASE acts on the chemical ALLIIN converting it to ALLICIN. ALIIN is an amino acid that doesn’t build proteins. Thus, it could kill insects becauseof its smell which humans dislike too. Furthermore, the garlic helps the insecticide to be more secure and natural. For the siling labuyo(capsicum annuum)which can be purchased at any markets, was also proved to an efficient ingredient in making an insect repellant. It has an active component known as CAPSAICIN . It was said to be an irritant for animals that causes a perception of burning of tissues. Capsaicin is the primary ingredient of pepper sprays. While in the other hand, the sap of euphorbia plant (euphorbia leucocephala), a cactus-like plant with spiny and succulent stems and flowers that are solitary, short and colorful. Base from the researchers, the euphorbia plant has a poisonous principle in all parts and it can be an active component in making an insecticide because it’s high toxicity.
