The main themes of this poem are family relationships and communication. In this poem the author says "And he said nothing". In this quote we see the lack of communication between the parents and the son. Even though the family had good intentions for their son, it wasn't really in his best interest, or what he really wanted. The son did not say anything to his parents about not wanting to work at the bank. He never complained about anything, but just went on to graduate, and went along with whatever his parents wanted and told him to do. Therefore this tells us that the son wanted to work outside of the bank, because he felt trapped and caged when he was inside the bank. This is shown by the author saying "Like a young bear inside his teller's cage, his axe-hewn hands upon paper bills, aching with empty strength and throttled rage". His parents never knew that he wanted to work on the farms, because of the lack of communication between them. These quotes and information explain that the lack of communication between families is not good, and you should have good family relationships. The author is trying to tell us to listen what your children have to say, because parents always right.…
During the poem, the father cannot remember a new story to tell his son. With this, the father starts to think of the upsetting idea that his son will be “packing his shirts…” and leaving. The father then yells and tries to give an explanation for his quietness. This reaction shows the father’s fear of his son leaving and losing him to time. The father’s view of his son leaving involves a plea to tell him one more story and to not leave. This contrast of the father, a man that forgot a new story and the parent in love with his child, makes for a better understanding of the deep relationship the father has with his…
In the well-written autobiographical narrative A Summer Life (1990), Gary Soto delivers an original assembly of aspects from himself as a six-year-old child. Soto asserts the scary realization of wants triumphing over what is ethical and he uses many examples of imagery, repetition and a chosen vocabulary to sketch out the ignorance that is evident in a child’s mind. Soto’s purpose is to selectively illuminate feelings of morals, paranoia and imagination that play a leading role in the lives of young children in order to adequately contain the audience’s attention and allow them to apply their own emotions. Given the excessive importance to detail and exquisite symbolism with angels, Soto is writing to a very diverse audience that has some sort of religious or spiritual background or knowledge and it seems he may even be reaching to engage parents’ opinions on the matter.…

“Grandchildren love and respect their grandparents” is the universal theme articulated in numerous art forms, including the folk tale “The Old Grandfather and His Little Grandson” and the poem “Abuelito Who.” Universal themes, making an appearance in various sorts of literature, are the messages and morals of life that have been handed down from generation to generation, because they are messages that can be understood by every person throughout all of history. The short poem “On Reading Poems to a Senior Class at South High,” by D.C. Poetry is one of the types of literature that can be analyzed as it is read to get a better understanding of what is happening. Elizabeth Bishop uses a number of elements of poetry to enforce the central theme of her poem "Manners." The title of this poem suggests that it will be about learning how to act right and what is expected out of an individual, but as readers read into the poem and start analyzing it, the central theme becomes a little bit different. As a reader of this poem, I started to realize that individuals in today's society no longer act as they did in the past. To me, the central theme of this poem becomes simply realizing that even though society has changed, there are still ones out there that care.…
