Preschool Observation
Preschool Observation Setting: I observed Anna, age four years and five months, on March 24, 2006, at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church Preschool. I observed for two and one-half hours from 9:15 am to 11:45 am. The preschool has three teachers and a full enrollment of 24 children, ages four and five, on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. They also have 24 children, age three, on Tuesday and Thursday. On the Friday that I visited, there were 21 children in attendance. There is a large enclosed play area outside. There is a large covered sandbox area with several toys including large plastic scoops, a large metal spoon, plastic bowls, shovels and buckets, a large play structure with a slide and climbing apparatus, a log cabin play house with several tools; such as plastic hammers, wrenches, and saws. There is a big sidewalk that goes around the perimeter of the yard where the children ride the tricycles. There are six tricycles but they were not out for use on the day that I observed. Inside there are many areas for playing and learning. There is a small room that has a cradle, dolls, blankets, dress-up clothes and shoes for girls, child size furniture; table, sink, dishes, and other kitchen items. Also kept in this room is a large roll of paper that can be cut to any length for drawing and painting. In this room is where one of the teachers meets for story time with her group of eight children. The large room is divided into two parts for the other two teachers and their groups when it is story time. The accordion divider is opened when the individual group time is over. In the large room are many different activity stations; easel with two sides for drawing with markers and paints, a fish tank with several fish, papers and crayons, table with small wooden puzzles with numbers on the pieces, small hard rubber birds, owls, and pelicans, a table with a hard plastic surface that lights up, a table with rocks and a magnifying glass, a table with Legos, an area for wooden

She started to throw her head back and scream very loudly. Then she would throw her arms around and kick, in an attempt to not be strapped in.     Tommy is sitting on the floor with his toys around him. His teacher sits on the floor next to him and he begins to hand his teacher a series of toys. He is interested in the reaction of his teacher as he hands her his blocks, one by one. Tommy leans forward, grabs a block and hands it to his teacher. He watches her face and sort of drops his mouth open as he waits for her reaction. She then tells him the letter and color on the block. He nods his head forward and then reaches for another block and proceeds to pick up another block. After picking up 5 blocks and handing them to his teacher he then crawls across the floor to a toy car and pushes it for a moment. He looks up at his teacher to see what she is doing and pushes the car toward her. He smiles at her and she smiles back and says “Is that your car?” he smiles again and nods his head forward. Tommy is very interested in his teacher’s reaction to him. She continues to watch him even when he is interested in a toy or moving away from her. He does check to see if she is pay attention to him as he plays. His teacher starts picking up toys and organizing the room and he periodically goes over to her and becomes interested in what she is doing. Tommy seems very dependent on his teachers mood. He smiles when she smiles and if she is distracted he wants to obtain her attention and seems to gauge and react to her facial expressions.     I set up an appointment with the Kids Club daycare at 9:45 am on November 4th to observe for an hour of toddler classroom who were between three and four years old. The principle gave me a warm greeting and took me to the class and introduced me to the teachers and the children. Everyone there made me feel welcomed.
