Recrystallization of Benzoic Acid
Recrystallization of Benzoic acid
Chemistry 204-002 Date: 4/9/2011 Hector Ortega

Recrystallization is a method used to purify compounds, and this is a very important procedure because compounds are naturally impure. Polarity and solubility play a big role in this experiment and these characteristics are exploited in order to have a crystallization of the desired compound. In this experimented benzoic acid was crystallize using ethanol and water. I chose these solvents based on part C of the experiment (table 1.1). The compound is too soluble in ethanol but too insoluble in water. Benzoic acid is a polar compound in comparison with ethanol which is a less polar compound. However at low temperatures benzoic acid is insoluble in water. Compounds are soluble in solvents with the same polarity, like dissolves like.

The benzoic Acid was dissolved in a very small amount of hot ethanol once dissolved water was added drop wise using a disposable pipet until it got cloudy. Once it reached this point the substance was removed from the steam bed and let cool down at room temperature. It is important to let this cool down slowly so impurities don’t get trapped in between the crystals. After 20 minutes the crystals were filtered out using a vacuum filter method. The crystals were carefully removed from the filter paper and weighted. These crystals were dried out for a period of 2 weeks, to later get a melting point. The MSDS value was compared with the experimental value to verify purity of the crystals

Also added was 0.45mL water and 0.165mL acetic anhydride and a magnetic spin vane. An air condenser was attached to the vial and it was heated on an aluminum block, with a temperature maintained at 120C. After the solution dissolved, it was heated an extra 20 minutes to allow the reaction to go to completion then cooled back to room temperature. An ice bath was used to encourage crystal growth. The crystals were removed and centrifuged, then placed on a pre-weighed watch glass to dry and weigh. Percent recovery was found. A small sample was set aside for melting…

About 1.55-g of benzil, 1.51-g of dibenzylketone and 12-mL of ethanol were placed in a 50-mL round bottom flask. A magnetic stir bar was also placed in the flask. A condenser was attached to the round bottom flask while the flask was placed in a 70oC hot water bath. The mixture was heated until all solids were dissolved. The temperature of the water bath was then heated to 80oC. A pasture pipet was used to add 2.25-mL of ethanolic potassium hydroxide solution downward through the condenser and into the flask.…

Through the top of the condenser, 14 mL of concentrated sulfuric acid was added drop wise over a period of ten minutes. The addition of the acid created a change in color of the solution to a rustic orange color. The mixture was refluxed for 30 minutes and the solution changed to a faded yellow-orange color. Once reflux was complete, a simple distillation was set up, with the 25 mL collection graduated cylinder placed in an ice bath. The mixture was distilled and combined with the hood partners’ distilled mixture. The distillate was placed in a separatory funnel with 10 mL of distilled water. Once separated, the distillate was added to the funnel again with 9 M sulfuric acid. The organic layer was still in the funnel after separation, as distilled water was added to the solution and then 10 mL of a saturated solution of sodium bicarbonate. The organic solution was dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate for a week. The liquid product was transferred to a 25 mL round bottom flask equipped with a stir bar and a simple distillation was set up. The solution was distilled and the density of the bromide was calculated at 1.222 grams/mL with a boiling range of 87-92◦C. The theoretical yield was calculated at 12.847 grams and the percent yield was 72.3 percent. Next was the characterization and assessment of the purity of the…

The volume of 20 mmol of 2-methylcyclohexanol was calculated and transferred into a round-bottom flask. Then 0.7 mL of 85 % phosphoric acid was mixed in. The reaction vessel was clamped to a ring stand over a suitable heat source and an apparatus was assembled for simple distillation using a Hickman still, water cooled condenser, and thermometer. Then a conical vial was weighted and recorded. After turning on the heat source in slow power, it was waited until it started to distillate. The temperature when it began was 58°C. Using a Pasteur pipet, the distillate was regularly transferred into the conical vial until only a yellow solution remained. It wasn’t left to dry completely. The temperature was 75°C when the vessel was taken from the heat source. The distillate was then washed with 1.5 mL of 5 % aqueous sodium bicarbonate. Then the aqueous lower layer was carefully removed. The upper layer was cloudy at first until it started to become clear after a few minutes. The solution was dried through anhydrous calcium chloride. Then it was weighted.…

Sodium Benzoate is a common food preservative used in food products such as jams and jellies, soft drinks, pickles, condiments etc and in tinned products in the market. This experiment aimed to determine whether benzoic acid is formed from it’s superior soluble form sodium benzoate in stomach acid, which is simulated by HCl (pH=2). It has been seen that at a low optimum pH, i.e. in the presence of sufficient hydrochloric acid, sufficient benzoic acid is yielded. The percentage yield is determined from the calculations of the theoretical (stoichiometric) calculations and the actual yield from the reaction. Also throughout the experiment, some basic laboratory operations such as measuring mass and volume, separating solids from liquids by vacuum filtration and drying solids are familiarized with.…

The objective of the experiment was to reduce Benzil, using sodium borohyride as the reducing agent. In a benzil reduction, there are five possible products than can occur, specifically a racemic mixture of benzoin, racemic mixture of hydrobenzoin, or meso-hydrobenzoin. Therefore, three different tests were conducted in determining the identity of the product: melting point, thin light chromatography, and infrared spectroscopy.…

In this experiment, benzoin was oxidized by nitric acid to benzil, which in turn was rearranged to benzilic acid. Prior to beginning the experiment, the theoretical yield of benzil was discovered. The limiting reactant in the reaction, benzoin + nitric acid benzil, was benzoin at 0.00141 moles. This value was discovered by the initial amount of the reactants used: 0.30 grams benzoin and 1.5 ml Nitric Acid (see Eq 1). Using the moles of the limiting reagent benzoin, the theoretical yield of benzil was calculated to be 0.296 grams (see Eq 2). Before crystallization, the…

Assessment of sample purity for a known substance. By comparing observed range for an actual sample to the known range for a pure sample, I can tell whether my actual sample is pure or contaminated (the range is depressed and broadened). So, In part A, melting point of benzoic acid was observed in range 122 to 125 ¨¬C. By comparing melting point of benzoic acid (121 ¨¬C) with result from part A, the result is little higher than the pure melting point. So I can tell it is little contaminated.…

The experiment was begun by mixing trans-cinnamic acid and glacial acetic acid with an added stir bar and placed on the magnetic stirrer the solution mixed up very well. After stirring, bromine/acetic acid was added over five increments and stirred and the solution turned a dark orange color and then began to fade to a lighter color. After vacuum filtration the substance dried and appeared much harder and less liquefied than before. Once the dried substance was obtained the melting point was found along with the melting point range.…
