Reflection of the Role and Responsibilities of the Teacher
Roles and Responsibilities of a teacher are vital and must be learnt, as a general rule, to ensure quality of teaching. To embark on this journey it is essential to attain enough knowledge about the subject and gather the correct material for teaching. It is not only sufficient to hold good quality knowledge on the subject, but also have a presentable appearance.

The teacher is responsible for student behaviour and classroom management, as well as to understand the capability of the learners. Therefore it is essential for teachers to assess the students level of understanding. As all students learn in different ways, there is the Honey and Mumford theory 'learning styles' (Honey, P. & Mumford, A. 1992), to assist teachers. By carrying out group work it will provide a good chance to get students working together as it facilitates the need for productive talk, (Edwards & Mercer, 1987). Here the 'sociological' learning style can be applied. By implementing this on the students it allows them to learn from each other and share ideas with one another. The students can also participate in exploratory talk (Mercer & Hodgkinson 2008) which allows them to teach each other and take ownership of their own ideas. This is very encouraging as it allows the students to indulge deeply on the knowledge they hold, when explaining to other individuals. Also with the help of the internet and modern technology there are many ways to get the students interactively involved with lessons. To allow them to work on their own, will be a better way of learning as they will be learning on their own terms. Here one other learning style has been applied, which is the 'tactile' style, this is where the student learns best when they are given the opportunity by doing something by themselves. On the other hand there is the auditory learning style whereby a learner benefits from simply listening, so if the lectures are well planned and class discussions are carried out it will

    ‘The role and responsibility of the teacher is a complex one’ cited (Wilson, 2008, p. 4) I agree to this as they are hard to define and all roles and responsibilities are different depending on which subject you are teaching and the age of the learners. However my main role is to ensure learners gain their qualifications from the way in which I deliver the subject. I must take in to consideration the different learning styles and levels of the learners. ‘Teaching and learning should be a structured process’ cited by (Wilson, Practical Teaching a Guide to PTLLS & DTLLS, 2008, p. 15) Which leads to the teaching and learning cycle and the first stage that I will address is identifying the needs of the learners. To find out how I would do this in my area of teaching, I discussed with my mentor how the initial assessment process is carried out and to begin it involves interviewing each of the learners to discuss their current skills and experiences to ensure they are applying for the correct course then once enrolled on to the course all the full time students must then complete a diagnostic test, which will give results containing information regarding their key skills level and individual learning styles. I will use (flemings, 2005)four styles of learning to discover this which is appropriate for my teaching subject. This will help me identify any learning barriers and prepare individual learning plans for students who may need extra support or training, which will give them their own individual targets to help me plan a lesson. To do this I will firstly identify what the topic is about and plan my resources and materials, ensuring I complete any risk assessments beforehand if using certain equipment. My individual learning plans will help me use differentiation methods to suit all learner’s levels and abilities, and ensuring I adapt to all strengths and weaknesses of each student, However at the end of a lesson I will re cap with the students and…

    The main role of the teacher is that of facilitator of learning by leading discussions, asking open-ended questions, guiding process and task and enabling participation of the learners. They must also provide students with the opportunity to take charge of their learning, encourage the discovery of new ideas, to gain insight into their studies and make connections.
