Roles and Responsibilities
Understand own Roles and Responsibilities in Lifelong Learning

1.2 Analyse own responsibilities for promoting equality and valuing diversity

Definition of Equality:

Equality is ensuring individuals or groups of individuals are treated fairly and equally and no less favourably, specific to their needs, including areas of race, gender, disability, religion or belief, sexual orientation and age.
Promoting equality should remove discrimination in all of the aforementioned areas. Bullying, harassment or victimization are also considered as equality and diversity issues.

Definition of Diversity:

Diversity aims to recognise, respect and value people’s differences to contribute and realise their full potential by promoting an inclusive culture for all staff and students.
It means understanding that each individual is unique, and recognizing our individual differences.
These can be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies. Ways to promote Equality:

We can promote equality and diversity by treating all staff and students fairly and creating an inclusive culture for all staff and students. Ensuring equal access to opportunities to enable students to fully participate in the learning process and enabling all staff and students to develop to their full potential.
Equipping students with the skills to challenge inequality and discrimination in their study environment and making certain that any learning materials do not discriminate against any individuals or groups

Example for promoting Equality:

In communicating with students who have speech impairments, resist the temptation to indicate that you have understood when in fact you have not. Students with speech impairments are accustomed to being asked to repeat, so don't be afraid that you'll offend them if you ask them to "say it again" or to spell words

Equality, diversity and Inclusion are all inter linked. In my role as Service Manager it is my role to ensure that anti-discriminatory practice is promoted as a key organisational value. It is essential as a manager that I raise staff awareness about equality, diversity and inclusion. Inclusion is a sense of belonging, feeling included, and feeling respected, valued for who you are, feeling a level of supportive energy and commitment from others so that you can achieve your best. Inclusion ensures everyone has access to resources, rights, goods and services, and is able to participate to activities. Equality does not mean treating everyone the same because people are all unique. People have different needs at different times to meet these needs effectively we need to engage with people as…
