Ship-Trap Island: A Short Narrative
Awakening from General Zaroff’s comfortable bed, Rainsford felt he just had the most bizarre dream in his life. What happened slowly came back to his mind. He won in Zaroff’s hunt and then he fell asleep in Zaroff’s bed. Zaroff was the hunter who lived in the enormous building on Ship-Trap Island.
Rainsford wasn’t mad like the day before, and he got dressed and walked down the to the diner looking for breakfast. Zaroff wasn’t there, but there was a new person, Evan. Evan looked exactly like Ivan, but he had red hair. He was very sociable and polite.
After Rainsford ate breakfast, he overheard a conversation on his way up. It was Zaroff talking to some guy on the cell phone. He yelled “Where are the people, I need them by tonight?” All of a sudden, Rainsford felt very insecure and that there is a great possibility that Zaroff wants him keep him on the island, kill him, or throw him in the ocean. If Rainsford doesn’t go now, he wouldn’t have another chance.

He tried to lift the window, but it was locked. He ran downstairs, passing Evan along the way. He went to the door, but it was locked. He went to Evan who was in the kitchen and an idea came to him. What if he tells Evan how dangerous Zaroff is? Will Evan help him escape?
“Evan, I have to tell you something!” For a second Rainsford hesitated, but he chose to continue. “General Zaroff is very dangerous. He shoots men. I survived his hunt, but I don’t know what he might do now. Remember, Ivan, Zaroff’s previous assistant. He had to help Zaroff hunt his victim, but he died under one of my traps. Even if you don’t get hurt, do you even want to help Zaroff kill people? It is a crime and you are being an accomplice! It is also wrong to not tell on

(Connell 41) There were some of last few sentences of the story provided a somewhat cryptic ending. This meant that Rainsford had beat Zaroff. Since Zaroff was beat by Rainsford he won his bed. This also means Rainsford has won the hunt and is finally free and does not have to worry about hunting humans or ever being the prey again. The ending didn't tell you a lot, but told you some main things so you know and can put together with what happened next. Rainsford wakes up the following morning. Everything in the house is quiet, and he feels alone. Rainsford gets up out of bed and he feels an ache in his neck from something hard in the pillow. He lifted it up to find a knife with blood stains sitting under the pillow. Rainsford didn’t know what to do next, but he knew last night was one of the best he’s ever had. As he sits in the dining room and eats out of fine china, he thinks he might as well give hunting humans a try since killing two the last few days didn’t hurt him at all. He starts walking outside and locates the cellar that holds all the other prisoners from crashed ships. Whenever he walked in, the captives hopped up in excitement thinking they were being rescued because it was someone other than Zaroff walking in.…

Rainsford will not take over General Zaroff’s game of hunting other humans. For instance, when General Zaroff asks Rainsford to go hunting, he says, “Thank you, I’m a hunter, not a murderer.”(25) Rainsford classifies himself as someone who hunts animals, but not humans. He disapproves of General Zaroff’s game and most likely still does. In addition, while Rainsford is being hunted, he thinks, “The Cossack was the cat; he was the mouse. Then it was that Rainsford knew the full meaning of terror.”(31) Rainsford is truly afraid at this point just like other humans are when they are being hunted. He has had the horrifying experience and probably doesn’t want anyone to feel this fear. As a result, Rainsford is a gentleman and animal…

Despite its treacherous setting, "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell is not as dangerous as "The Veldt" by Ray Bradbury. Zaroff starts to explain to Rainsford how hunting animal’s no longer gives him a thrill, but Rainsford is confused as Zaroff explains what type of creatures he now hunts. After a lengthy conversation at the dinner table, Zaroff gets to the point and says, “It must have courage, cunning, and above all, it must be able to reason.” (Connell). It is here where Rainsford realizes it is humans that Zaroff has moved on to and suddenly Rainsford begins to fear for his life. Zaroff wants a challenge, because all the men he is hunting are making it too easy, so he believes Rainsford will give him a challenge, since he is a hunter himself. In the story, The Most Dangerous Game, Richard Connell shows that Rainsford is regretful, anxious, and fearful. First, it is shown that Rainsford is regretful due to the fact that General Zaroff gives him the option to play the most dangerous game or be whipped by Ivan, to which Rainsford chooses to play the game. Rainsford tries again and again to fall asleep at night, but he is helpless with his choice replaying in his mind. “Rainsford could not quiet his brain with the opiate of sleep.” Second, Rainsford’s anxiousness is shown because he is uneasy about the thought of not being able to see the day after next. Although he is a marvelous hunter, there is a possibility that he may be no match to someone who is undefeated in assassinating humans.…

Once Zaroff revealed what his “most dangerous game” was, he attempted to justify his murderous hobby by arguing that, “‘I am strong...If I wish to hunt why should I not,’”(10). Here, Zaroff is committing a standard mistake; he does something because he can, but morally should not. The only way he actually justifies his “game” is by saying that it is diverting and provides a challenge for him. The belief that he is all-powerful blinds him from the fact that since he has frequently perpetrated against innocent humans, he will have to pay for his actions. Furthermore, Zaroff concluded that Rainsford had perished, but he is later proven wrong. As an illustration, “A man, who had been hiding in the curtains of the bed, was standing there… ‘I congratulate you’... ‘You have won the game,’”(18). Connell uses this event to affirm that Zaroff had indeed been hunted all along. Although he did not realize it, Zaroff was gradually falling prey to Rainsford. The American was constantly outsmarting him and made numerous attempts on his life. Throughout the story Rainsford was gaining leverage; it is clear he won because Zaroff was cocky and ignorant of his surroundings. In Zaroff’s case, the very thing that made him powerful debilitated…

I didn’t think we’d ever get this raft finished, Charles thought. He sat on it cross-legged and stared down into the water of the pond. His friend, Pete, stood on the bank and watched him. It was calm and blue as the sky. “So,” Pete shouted, “Are you ever coming back” “No,” Charles called. “I’m staying here all night.” Pete laughed. he always laughed. “All night.” He had had his turn already, so it was mine now, Charles thought.
