Society in Tomorrow When the War Began

Authors often use novels and written text to voice their ideas and opinions on society. John Marsden has used his novel Tomorrow When the War Began to demonstrate the order of society and how different parts of society need to blend together to avoid it becoming chaotic. Using his ideas on friendship, human nature and challenging stereotypes, he portrays his idea on how these elements need to fit together to create a well-balanced society.
Without friendship and the bond between people, and sometimes countries, society would crumble and fall much like it started to in Tomorrow When the War Began. The lack of ‘friendship’ between Australia and the country that attacked them led to the demise and the destruction of a town. Because there wasn’t a friendly relation between the two countries the attacking country didn’t think about the consequences when it came to attacking Australia and as a result of that the social structure and order in Warrawee started to collapse. On the other hand a strong bond of friendship can build up society and keep it strong. A smaller scale example of this is the friendship of the teenagers. Because they have such a strong bond and have been together through so much they manage to stay together. Ellie talks about their “need to stick together” and because they are the only ones who are free they create their own ‘mini-society’ during their time on the run. Their friendship keeps them close and stops their ‘society’ from becoming chaotic and unorganized.
Society is largely based on human nature and relies on the interaction of humans to keep it going strong. If people interact in a civilized manner and treat each other with basic decency then society will thrive and prosper. The teenagers manage to grasp this concept and through the whole ordeal, apart from a few times that they got into small arguments, they manage to treat each other with the upmost respect and kindness.
