The test scores were in the bottom 5% in the state and less than 50% of the students who started Carolina High graduated with their 9th grade cohort. The teacher turnover rate was high, where 15 to 20% of the teachers left after each school year ended. The focus of the school was more centered on discipline and to keep the students in the classroom rather than curriculum and instruction and learning. Reactive approaches to education were employed rather than proactive. Because of the challenges the school faced, finding teachers became very difficult and less than quality teachers were sent to the school from other schools just so there was a warm body in the classroom. Cordington High School’s located in a small town in North Carolina with a population of about 10,000 people. Down the road from the school is a home with a Confederate flag hanging in the front yard, even though the flag is a known racist symbol because of the negative connection used in the past to deal with slavery. Though the town is diverse, the towns’ people are stuck in their ways and only see the Confederate flag as an expression to their heritage. Down the road of this house is the high school which contain 80 percent of whites, 10 percent blacks, and 10 percent of other ethnics. Although the school is diverse it is important to conduct studies because it gives a better perspective because of the small sample of students compared…

The Laguna Beach High School’s Administration has incinerated the GPA of its incoming class of freshman. The horrific news came out after the administration decided to demolish the weighted honors credit of a 5.0 instead of a 4.0 for certain classes. The documentary At Berkeley directed by Fredrick Wiseman is a masterpiece that allows its viewers the ability to take a look into the higher public education system in the United States. This film makes a statement about higher public education in the United States by using various Cinematic techniques. During his time in northern California Wiseman had the privilege of observing the lives of different people at the University of Cal Berkeley and noticed a trend that he felt needed to be presented. The trend was how hard it is for an institution to maintain excellence amid incredible financial pressure from all directions and how hard it is for students to stay apart of this excellence. For my entire life of schooling, both my parents and I would agree that I constantly complained about the educational systems in which I was enrolled. But when I actually take the time to think about everything I have been through, I realize that I have indeed had an excellent education. My schooling was full of opportunities and experiences, all of which contributed to the person I am today; adequate education has been an indispensable facet of my being. Sadly, not everyone has had this same privilege. And now as a college student, I am becoming even more aware of this sad fact. Looking around me in such a diverse city as Chicago, I find myself being more and more grateful. When I read Jonathan Kozol's Fremont High School, this these feelings were even more reassured.…

The College of Arts and Sciences at UPenn provide more than the immediate exquisite architecture and an inspiring atmosphere that molds a sense of belonging that is captured by an individual on his or her first moments in Pennsylvania. Beneath the sediments and moments of happiness and strife founds had to endure to establish such an institution, lies a foundation that dwells in the significance of academics and education. Learning is not a one-way street. America is a melting pot of a spectrum of backgrounds, experiences, priorities, and passions. I would engage academically at the University of Pennsylvania by advocating the cultivation and understanding of diversity. Of the four undergraduate schools, Arts and Sciences stands alone in being the most colored by covering a vast array of contrasting studies. It is captivating to bring the reasonings behind someone’s choice of major to surface. Education is the only life long friend to not stagger, dissipate, nor disappoint. She is the only peer that can bring the courage and adventure to create and understand beyond what is bedridden in the comfort zone. She is the only companion that guarantees opened doors. Not only as a student, but as a human being, exercising my right to think is vital to my existence. It makes me an individual while placing me suitably within a cultural group. I am who I am because of what I know. Diversity is the offspring of knowledge and I would be more than honored to share it with…
