It involves a humorous story about a boy named Laurie starting kindergarten and getting into trouble at school, then deceiving his parents by telling them of a bad boy called Charles getting up to mischief, which is really himself. Jackson uses the language style of first person, from the mother’s point of view to develop the story from a one sided, biast perspective. In the opening paragraph, the mother narrates the image of Laurie as a “sweet-voiced nursery-school tot” and the audience is lead to believe her. As the story continues, oblivious to real nature of Laurie the reader is engaged by the mischief and bad boy behavior that is expressed by Laurie to his parents of this mysterious boy named Charles. Similar to the “Loaded Dog” in that Humor is used to attract and entertain the reader. Jackson uses the dialogue of Laurie to reveal the character of Charles to the reader which creates humor and intrigues the audience. The dialogue of Laurie’s telling his parents of Charles “Today Charles hit the teacher” and “Charles was bad again today” and also the dialogue of the parents “this Charles boy sounds like a bad influence” is used for a humorous effect and attracts the…

The process of social peer pressure brought about by the narrator slowly manipulates the signalman to distort his own vision and belief as he starts to believe the way mainstream do. When the signalman tells his story about his first encounter with a ghost, the narrator, considering the signalman’s story a nonsense one, tells the signalman that “the figure must be a deception of his sense of sight”. He also points out that such figures often trouble “patients”. His statement not only indicates the way he groups the kind of men like the signalman as patients but also indirectly leads the signalman to raise question whether his experience is real. As the signalman continues his story by explaining that the accident does take place only a few hours after his confrontation with a ghost, the narrator emphasizes his standpoint by suggesting the signalman that “men of common sense did not allow much of coincidences in making the ordinary calculations of life.” This suggestion distinguishes the line between “a man of common sense” like the narrator himself with “a troubled man” like the signalman very crucially. As the signalman finishes his story, the narrator departs his box by leaving his kind offer to take the signalman to “the wisest medical practitioner” which highlights the distinct line between the narrator and the signalman. The signalman eventually gets killed instantaneously by the train because he decides to ignore the reoccurrence of the warning voice of Tom, the driver in that it resembles the ghost’s voice for he starts to believe that such voices are not real.…

The mood in the story is melancholic. In the start of the story, the main character, Gerard, thinks of the time when Hitler was ruling and sent little children to gas ovens, and at about line 24 he wonders if he’s just like everybody else, which I find rather sad because it appears that he is questioning himself. Is he like everybody else? Also it starts to snow, which could refer to Gerard crying, depending on the mood of the story. Since this story is as sad as it is, I would believe that he is crying. Everything is covered in snow, meaning that everything turns heavy and cold; not only the weather, but also the mood. Even when it looks sad, Gerard always tries to think of something good, such as his daughter, Lucy, whom he loves very much. There is a blizzard when Gerard meets the old love, Laurel and the memories starts to resurface inside of him.…
