Stereotypes – good or bad?
Most of you know what a stereotype is, and you probably fall under any type of stereotype. Stereotype is any commonly known public belief about a certain social group or a type of individual. They may refer to a specific sex, race, religion or country, often they different various aspects of personality together.
All we know stereotyping for Ukrainians. As a result, people think that we like to complain, to drink vodka, we are dreamers and not doers and others. We have good and bad people in every nation and most people with fixed stereotypes or prejudices are pretty narrow-minded anyway.
I was just curious to find out different stereotypes about women. And honestly most of them are rather negative. For example: 1. Women are not as smart as a man.
2. Girls are not good at sports. 3. All blondes are stupid. 4. All models are anorexic. 5. Women are not so good in cooking as men.
Nothing good comes out of stereo-typing. It's an attempt to classify people, and it's usually based on appearances. It's really quite impossible to categorize everyone because people all have differences. I doubt there are two people completely the same.
However, I think stereotyping can be good phenomenon in advertising. For example, all we know that Italian wine, Swiss clocks, German cars, Swiss banks are the best ones. And it`s also a kind of stereotyping but with a positive meaning. In this case those products are world-famous and there`s no need in high promotion and there`s a percentage of success only in trend and mark. So, it is a god point in stereotyping.
Stereotyping is not only wrong, it is also hurtful and offensive. I`ll give you a situation from my life. Most of people think that there`s a high level of corruption in Higher Educational Establishments and students offer bribes to their lecturers and instructors not only during session period. And once my friend asked me smth. like “How many do you pay for one exam”. It`s really hard
